WELCH AND NAKANISHI CAPTURE AJGA ARIZONA JUNIOR CLASSIC
Career-low 66 propels Welch to Girls Division honors

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Whitney Welch of Las Vegas fired a career-low 66 en route to the Girls Division title at the final round of the third annual AJGA Arizona Junior Classic. The win was the second career AJGA title for the honorable mention Polo Golf Junior All-American. In the Boys Division, honorable mention Polo Golf Junior All-American Masaki Nakanishi of Osaka, Japan, carded a final-round 67 to edge Colby Beckstrom of North Muskegon, Mich., by one stroke.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at The Raven Golf Club at South Mountain, the AJGA Arizona Junior Classic field included 143 junior golfers (27 from Arizona) representing 15 states and Japan. Including the fields at the Taylor Made-adidas Junior at Chateau Elan (Georgia) and the Taylor Made-adidas Junior at Whispering Pines (Texas), more than 456 players teed it up at the three respective AJGA events over Easter Weekend.

Welch's round of 32-34-66 included six birdies without a bogey. Her 72-66--138 total bested Jane Lee of Torrance, Calif., by two shots.

"I didn't have a lot of pressure today because I didn't play in the final group," said Welch. "I just did the best I could because I know I can't control how others play. The key today was the mastery of the par-5 holes, where I was 3-under-par. That was definitely a difference maker for me."

Lee's 70-70-140 gave her sole possesion of second while Emma Stachowicz of Pacific Palisades, Calif., took third at 72-69-141. Rounding out the top five were Californians Sunny Oh of Torrance at 143, and Sara Jones of Valencia and Erica Blasberg of Corona both at 144.

A two-day total of 68-67-135 gave Nakanishi his first career AJGA title.

"Every player here was of high caliber," said Nakanishi, who is considered one of the three best junior golfers in Japan. "This is the best golf I could play. I am thankful for the experience."

He overpowered the par-5s all day, recording three birdies and one eagle. Battling all day with first-round leaders Beckstrom and Daniel Im of La Mirada, Calif., as well as Breene Murphy of Los Alamitos, Calif., Nakanishi birdied the par-5 17th hole to claim sole possession of the lead. Playing in the same group, Murphy rolled in a birdie putt on 17 to trail Nakanishi by a single stroke heading into No. 18. After dunking his approach shot in the water hazard, Murphy nearly holed out for a miraculous par. A tap-in bogey for Murphy gave him a two-day total of 68-69-137 and a tie for third with Im.

Beckstrom recorded an ace on the par-3 11th hole, but followed the hole-in-one up with three consecutive bogeys. His second-place total of 67-69-136 came with an exclamation point as he curled in a long birdie putt on No. 18.
Other top-five finishers in the Boys Division at 138 were Jay Choi of Buena Park, Calif., and Ryan Moore of Puyallup, Wash.

Welch's 66 was the Girls Division low final round while Jonathan Taruc of Las Vegas went low in the Boys Division with a 65.
