FIFTEEN BOYS QUALIFY FOR AJGA COMPAQ
JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP AT TROPHY LAKE
Moore's 1-under-par takes medalist honors
UNION, Wash. - Ryan Moore of Puyallup, Wash.,
won his first and last qualifier of his AJGA career.
Moore's 36-34--70 was enough to take medalist honors
and secure a spot in the AJGA Compaq Junior Championship
at Trophy Lake, his final non-invitational AJGA tournament
before he heads to UNLV for college in the fall.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association,
the third-annual AJGA Compaq Junior Championship at
Trophy Lake will include these 15 qualifiers in the
84-player field. Of the 84, more than 40 Washingtonians
will be represented along with 10 states and Canada.
Brent Peterson of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., Craig Leslie
of Spokane, Wash., and Justin Gravatt of Olympia, Wash.,
all came in with even-par 71's to trail Moore by one
stroke.
Going through a qualifier gave Moore a newfound respect
for the players that don't have the luxury of being
automatically admitted to tournaments.
"It was interesting to see what happens at the
qualifier," Moore said. "It was really brutal.
These are tough to go through and there are a lot of
good players out here that still don't get in."
Moore, who won the AJGA Thunderbird International Junior
in May, will be one of the favorites this week.
"I'm just going to come out and play like it was
any other tournament," he said. "It's a tough
course. One of those where under par doesn't necessarily
win it all. So anything goes."
For Peterson, he doesn't see it as any other tournament.
This is his first and he wants to get off to a good
start.
"I can't expect too much," he said after
his 33-38--71 round. "But I'm going to go out and
play my game and not get caught up in the moment."
Other qualifiers include: Brady Sharp of Port Orchard,
Wash., at 72; Greg Mcauley of Surrey, B.C., and John
Laws of Edmonds, Wash., at 74; Danny Wendt of Kingman,
Ariz., Ryan Larson of Seattle, Derek Lee of North Bend,
Wash., and Robbie Turnbull of Hope, Idaho, at 75; and
Sean Packer of Sumner, Wash., Daniel Kim of Cerritos,
Calif., Jason Puterbaugh of Carlsbad, Calif., and Joseph
Kim of Laguna Niguel Calif., at 76.
The AJGA Compaq Junior Championship at Trophy Lake
begins Tuesday at Trophy Lake Golf and Casting at 6:30
a.m. with tee times off the No. 1 and 10 tees.
