VALLELY GRABS LEAD OF AJGA FUTURELINKS
JUNIOR AT WHISTLER
White and Park tie for lead in Girls Division
WHISTLER, B.C.--Ryan Vallely of
Lethbridge, Alberta, tore through the weather to card
a 3-under-par 68 in the first round of the AJGA FutureLinks
Junior at Whistler. In the Girls Division, Adrienne
White of Red Deer, Alberta and Eom Ji Park of Vancouver,
B.C., lead the field with a 6-over-par 77.
The AJGA FutureLinks Junior at Whistler features 84
of the top junior golfers, ages 13-18, representing
10 states and four Canadian provinces. Thirty-three
juniors from Canada and three honorable mention Polo
Golf Junior All-Americans are included in the field.
Vallely, White and Park took first round leads in their
respective divisions despite continuous rains and cold
winds with temperatures near 50° F (10° C).
Vallely is playing in his first AJGA tournament and
is ranked fourth in Bank of Montreal Order of Merit.
"I am happy to finally be playing in an AJGA event,"
the 18-year-old said. "If I am able win, it is
just an added bonus."
Vallely, a member of the Canadian Junior Team, had
nines of 32-36 en route to his first-round lead. His
round included six birdies, nine pars and three bogeys.
"I played a really solid round after getting off
to a great start," Vallely said. "I putted
phenomenal today, definitely the best I have putted
in a long time.
"This course is in wonderful shape and the greens
were awesome, they were probably running a little slower
because of all the rain, but it was great."
Kyle Patterson of Mukilteo, Wash., is one-stroke behind
Vallely at 2-under-par 69. Brandon Fry of Victoria,
B.C., and Colin Gilliham of Mission, B.C., are tied
at 1-under-par 70 for third place. Tied for fourth place
is Mike Zefkeles of Medina, Wash., and Zack Miller of
San Rafael, Calif., at even-par 71.
In the Girls Division, White carded nines of 38-39
in her first AJGA tournament.
"I went out and didn't expect much and tried to
play my best," the 17-year-old said. "I like
that you don't have to walk past the clubhouse when
you make the turn because it's easier to carry your
momentum."
White, who qualified for this tournament by winning
the FutureLinks Western Championship, had one birdie
for her round.
"My mental edge kept me on top of this round,"
White said. "I was able to not let the rains bother
me, but tomorrow I need to work on closing out the round.
I ended with bogeys on Nos. 16 and 17."
Park tallied nines of 35-42 for her first round total
77.
"On the front nine, I played well," Park
said. "On the back, I lost my concentration because
of the weather."
Park, who had two birdies on the day, struggled with
her driver.
"I really couldn't hit well today," Park
said. "I hit two out of bounds and then had two
three putts late in the round which can't happen the
rest of the tournament.
"I need to hit more fairways and greens the rest
of the week."
Kristen Svicarovich of Hillsboro, Ore. is in third
place with a 7-over-par 78.
Second-round action starts Wednesday with tee times
at 7:00-11:03 a.m. For more information please contact
AJGA headquarters at (604) 905-5019.
