AJGA SHELL WORLD GOLF VILLAGE JUNIOR
CHAMPIONSHIP
Slammer & Squire at World Golf Village
St. Augustine, Florida
July 23-26, 2001
MILLER PULLS AWAY FROM FIELD FOR
FIRST AJGA VICTORY
Code wins fifth AJGA title
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Zack Miller of San Rafael,
Calif., carded a 4-under-par 68 in the final round to
cruise to his first AJGA title in the AJGA Shell World
Golf Village Junior Championship. Miller shot rounds
of 70-69-68 for a three-day total of 9-under-par 207.
Whitney Code of Tampa, Fla., took the Girls Division
title with a three-round total of 4-over-par 220.
The Shell World Golf Village Junior Championship, conducted
by the American Junior Golf Association, featured 84
players, ages 13-18, from 12 states. Included in the
field were 46 competitors from Florida.
Miller continued his impressive tournament in the final
round with a round of 4-under-par 68. He made the turn
at even-par, but played the back nine in 4-under-par
32 with birdies on Nos. 11, 13, 15 and 16. It may have
been a par he made on the front nine, however, that
saved his round.
After hooking his drive out-of-bounds on the 541-yard,
par-5 8th hole, Miller made par after rolling in a 15-foot
putt.
"That really kept my head in the game," Miller
said. "Instead of being 2-over-par, I was at even-par,
and that was a huge confidence boost for the rest of
the round."
Miller played the par-5s in 8-under-par this week with
one eagle and seven birdies.
The 17-year-old has played exceptionally well this
year, finishing no lower than 12th in his previous three
AJGA tournaments. Miller hopes this title will give
him the confidence he needs in the future to compete
with the country's best, especially at next week's AJGA
Lucent Technologies Boys Junior Championship.
"It hasn't really hit me yet, but it probably
will on the way home," Miller added. "I'm
just going to take it one day at a time in the future
and stay focused. If I can do that, I should be pretty
competitive."
Chris Kirk of Woodstock, Ga., finished second at 2-under-par
214 on rounds of 70-72-72. Joe Green III (71-75-69)
of Jacksonville, Fla., and Hochul Kim (69-75-71) of
Clearwater, Fla., tied for third at 1-under-par 215.
David Denham (74-71-72) of Tifton, Ga., Andy Leadbetter
(77-68-72) of Orlando, Fla., and Brian Harman (73-71-73)
of Savannah, Ga., were all fifth at 1-over-par 217.
Whitney Code of Tampa, Fla., won the Girls Division
with rounds of 75-72-73-220 to win her fifth career
AJGA title. Code defeated Yunny Cho of Bradenton, Fla.,
by two shots.
Code was playing in her final AJGA individual competition,
and took her second title this year after winning the
Justin Leonard Deloitte & Touche Junior Team Championship
with her sister, Mallory. She will play for the East
team in the Canon Cup in Asheville, N.C., in two weeks.
"It's kind of sad, this being my last AJGA event,"
Code, a University of Florida signee, said. "But
it's good to go out with a win. I'm moving on to bigger
things."
Code played steadily all week. She played the front
nine in 1-over-par 37, and even-par 36 on the back nine.
She recorded two birdies in her round.
"I just played a really steady round," Code
added. "I avoided big numbers again and made a
lot of pars. I didn't really have any bad holes."
Code will head to the University of Florida with new
confidence after this week. She has been working with
her swing for the last six months, and it finally paid
off with a title.
"I had been struggling with my game this summer,
but it is really starting to come around," Code
said. "It gives me a lot of confidence going into
the fall."
Cho, a University of Georgia signee, was second at
76-75-71-222. Jessica Castle of Plantation, Fla., rounded
out the top three with rounds of 75-74-74-223.
