GIBSON, NELSON EMERGE VICTORIOUS AT SOUTH
PADRE
Pair top field, wind to share medallist honors
LAGUNA VISTA, Texas - David Gibson of Corpus Christi,
Texas, and Jon Nelson of Spring, Texas, shared medalist honors
Sunday at the AJGA Ashworth Postseason Junior at South Padre
Island.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Ashworth
Postseason Junior at South Padre Island featured 78 boys representing
six states. Sixty-two Texans competed in the event, which
was held at South Padre Island Golf Club.
Gibson (75-76-151) used one of the strongest closing rounds
of the day to jump from an eight-way tie for fifth into a
share of the top spot. His experience playing in the wind
came in handy on Sunday.
"The wind was tough but I think I had an advantage being
from Corpus (Christi)," the 16-year-old said. "I
really didn't think I was going to win today. I just tried
to go out and play well."
Nelson (70-81-151), who held the lead heading into Sunday's
final round, held on as scores climbed due to a constant three-club
wind. A strong start helped the 17-year-old stay at the top
of the leaderboard.
"I birdied two of the first four holes," said Nelson,
who hit the flagstick en route to birdie on No. 2. "I
struck the ball really well but just didn't putt well. I'm
not used to these fast greens."
For their efforts Gibson and Nelson each earned three automatic
entries into open AJGA events in 2003.
Pat Strandemo (71-81-152) of Encinitas, Calif., took third
place, while Luke Calcatera (75-79-154) of Keller, Texas,
and Mark Lindsey (75-79-154) of Houston shared fourth.
Strandemo, Calcatera and Lindsey each earned two 2003 entries
for their top-five finishes.
Earning one automatic entry after finishing in the top 15
were Brandon Jones of San Antonio, Texas; Mitch Hendon of
Burleson, Texas; Matt Powell of Coppell, Texas; Gregory Catlett
of Corpus Christi, Texas; Michael Mullin of Austin, Texas;
Blayne Rhynsburger of San Antonio, Texas; Phillip Williams
of Houston; Donald Nielsen of El Dorado Hills, Calif.; Alex
Osborne of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; Steven Frazier of Houston;
and Chase Todd of Sulphur, Okla.
