LEE TAKES SECOND-ROUND LEAD AT THE DOMINION COUNTRY CLUB
Johnson struggles but holds on to Girls Division lead

SAN ANTONIO — Michael Lee of Corinth, Texas, emerged as the second-round leader after shooting even-par 71 Wednesday at the Valero Texas Open Junior Shootout presented by Ingram Park Auto Center. Jennifer Johnson of Carlsbad, Calif., continued her lead in the Girls Division after carding a 79. Both Lee and Johnson will look to claim the title in Thursday's final round at The Dominion Country Club.

The Valero Texas Open Junior Shootout presented by Ingram Park Auto Center, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, is a 54-hole stroke play event being held at The Dominion Country Club in San Antonio. One-hundred and nineteen junior golfers from eight states and Mexico, including 95 from Texas, are competing in the tournament. Past champions of the event include Tiger Woods, as well as Brittany Lang and Morgan Pressel, both of whom recently tied for second at the U.S. Women's Open.

Despite bogeying the final two holes, Lee held off contenders to claim the second-round lead. Lee carded five birdies and five bogeys on the second day after shooting a first day score of 68.

“You never know what's going to happen. If I can keep it in the low 70s or high 60s tomorrow then I should be okay,” said Lee.

Coming in a close second to Lee in the Boys Division was Christopher Brown of Garland, Texas. Brown rounded out the day with two birdies to put him at 2-under-par for the tournament and one stroke behind Lee. Texas natives Cody Gribble of Dallas, Clark Mitzner of McKinney and Travis Woolf of Fort Worth, are all 1-under-par for the tournament.

Johnson carded eight pars for the second round to put her at 6-over-par for the tournament. Johnson recorded 37 putts on the day and says that putting is what she'll be working on for the final round.

“I just have to putt a little better. It seemed like the greens were harder and a little faster than yesterday,” said Johnson.

Coming in second in the Girls Division by only two strokes, after shooting a 71 to put her 8-over-par for the tournament, was Kristen Hendrix of Houston. Raelyn Smith of Odessa, Texas, stands alone in third place with a two-day total of 152, 10-over-par.
