LION KIM GOES LOW WITH A 7-UNDER-PAR 65
In-Kyung Kim atop leaderboard in the Girls Division

BLUFFTON, S.C. — Lion Kim of Lake Mary, Fla., fired a 7-under-par 65 to take the first-round lead at the 12th annual Hargray Junior Classic Wednesday. In-Kyung Kim of Hilton Head Island, S.C., carded four birdies en route to a 4-under-par 68 and the Girls Division lead.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Hargray Junior Classic features 84 players, ages 12-18, from 13 states and Peru. The event is being held at Hampton Hall Club in Bluffton, S.C.

Lion Kim carded eight birdies on the day, including five on the front nine, en route to a career low tournament round of 7-under-par 65. Four of his birdies came on the par-5s. He got off to a good start with three straight birdies on Nos. 5-7 and hit 16 greens in regulation.

“I did not make as many putts as I should have,” the 16-year-old Rolex Junior All-American said. “I hit my irons really well and I am really comfortable with my short irons. Tomorrow I just need to putt better than I did today.”

One stroke off the pace at 6-under-par 66 is Kyle Cochran of Soddy Daisy, Tenn. Tied for third at 5-under-par 67 are Neil Horsley of Cooper City, Fla.; Chesson Hadley of Raleigh, N.C.; and Alan Lee of Lima, Peru. At 4-under-par 68 is Spencer Cole of Greer, S.C.

In the Girls Division, In-Kyung Kim birdied all four par-5s to finish the day at 4-under-par 68 in her first AJGA event.

“I hit my irons shots really well and I was usually long off the tee,” Kim, 16, said. “I lipped out several putts and hit the flagstick on No. 10. I really enjoyed today and was just having fun.”

One stroke back of Kim at 3-under-par 69 is Alexandra Bodemann of Palm City, Fla., who was a Srixon Qualifier co-medalist for the Hargray Junior Classic on Monday. Tied for third at 1-under-par 71 is Jennifer Adyorough of Atlanta; Hunter Ross of Manakin-Sabot, Va.; Rebecca Durham of St. Simons Island, Ga.; and Rachel Uremovich of Hilton Head, S.C.
