LONG FIRES THIRD 68, WINS LOCKTON/CAPITOL FEDERAL KANSAS CITY JUNIOR
Kempton overcomes five-shot deficit to claim Girls Division

PRAIRIE VILLAGE, Kan. — Jace Long of Dixon, Mo., shot a 68 in the final round of the Lockton/Capitol Federal Kansas City Junior to win the tournament by two shots over second-round co-leader Cameron Peck of Olympia, Wash. Kayley Kempton of Littleton, Colo., finished with a 74 to win the Girls Division by two shots.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Lockton/Capitol Federal Kansas City Junior was held at Meadowbrook Golf & Country Club. The tournament was a 54-hole stroke play event that hosted a field of 99 players. Twenty-one states were represented in the field that consisted of 75 boys and 24 girls, ages 12 — 18.

Long, 16, claimed his first AJGA win since 2003, when he won the Nike Golf Junior All-Star Classic at Kingwood. The victory did not come easy as he fended off Peck throughout the day, until No. 7 when he said he began gaining momentum.

“Cameron made a 15-foot putt for birdie,” Long said. “I was able to make a 7-footer on top of him and then made a 15-foot putt on No. 8.”

Long continued his strong play to the par-5 15th when he hit his second shot over some trees and onto the green, leaving him a 10-foot eagle putt.

“I was able to make the putt and give myself a four-shot lead,” Long said.

After consecutive bogies on Nos. 16 and 17, Long was able to regain composure and par the final hole to win the tournament.

“I saw an ad at McDonalds talking about determination and focus,” Long said. “I just felt it was going to be my day.”

Finishing in second place was Peck at 206. In third place was Samuel Chavez of Hillsborough, Calif., at 208. Finishing in a tie for fourth place were Kevin Kring of Springfield, Mo., and Ty Spinella of Aledo, Texas at 209.

In the Girls Division, Kempton was able to play steady golf, as her playing competitor and second-round leader Margarita Ramos of Paradise Valley, Ariz., ran into rough spots.

“I was surprised when she doubled the first hole,” Kempton said. “I just had to play my own game. I knew it would give me a chance.”

This was Kempton's first AJGA win.

“It feels pretty good to end the summer this way,” she said. “It just shows anything can happen.”

Grace Chung of Fullerton, Calif., finished in second place after shooting a 72 to finish at 224 for the tournament. Ramos finished in third place at a 225 tournament total.
