GREELEY, FOSTER MEDAL AT SRIXON QUALIFIER FOR PINNACLE COMMUNITIES JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
De Guzman earns Medalist Honors in Girls Division with 1-over-par 73

COTO DE CAZA, Calif. — Bryce Greeley of Irvine, Calif., and Gavin Foster of North Tustin, Calif., both shot 1-over-par 73s to earn Medalist Honors at the Pinnacle Communities Junior Championship Srixon Qualifier. In the Girls Division, Faith De Guzman of Valley Glen, Calif., also posted a 1-over-par 73 to earn first place in her division.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Pinnacle Communities Junior Championship Srixon Qualifier was held on the Coto de Caza Golf & Racquet Club — North Course. Eighty-four boys and sixteen girls ages 12-18 each competed for a chance to play in the Pinnacle Communities Junior Championship that will take place from August 9-11 at the Coto de Caza Golf & Racquet Club — North Course.

Greeley was resilient during his round, bouncing back from a double bogey on his fifth hole to make birdie on his next. The 17-year-old said he relied heavily on his short game to get him out of trouble.

“I didn't give up, and I battled back,” Greeley said. “I've been working on that.”

Foster began his round with a birdie on his first hole and followed with three more during his round, including consecutive birdies on Nos. 18 and 1. Persistence was also a key for Foster after a double bogey slip-up on No. 3.

“It was a solid ball-striking round,” Foster said, “I knew it wasn't over because I had a lot of holes left, and I could still go low.”

In the Boys Division, nine more juniors qualified and will be playing in this week's event. Bradley Kohlrus of Sammamish, Wash., Johnny Mac Arthur of Santa Clarita, Calif., and Jong-Pil Park of La Habra, Calif. all shot 3-over-par 75s. Wyatt Amend of Ojai, Calif., Kenny Roberts of Seal Beach, Calif., Raymond Ho of Cerritos, Calif., Ryan Sack of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Dong Hui Kim of Bradenton, Fla., all qualified via a six-man, sudden-death playoff after posting 4-over-par 76s for the tournament.

Carding 2-over-par 74s, Quan Bui of Poway, Calif., Benjamin Lein of Diamond Bar, Calif., both opted to take one AJGA Tournament Exemption in lieu of playing in this week's event. Also opting out of the tournament at 75 was Ben Howard of Oak Park, Calif., and Marshall Colby of Thousand Oaks, Calif. Darren Saqui of Cerritos, Calif., and Chase Patten of Simi Valley, Calif., also opted out after both shooting 76s.

In the Girls Division, De Guzman played aggressive golf, and it paid off in the form of three birdies in her round. She said her mindset was simple during the round.

“I was relaxed, and I didn't think about anything,” De Guzman said. “I stayed on the fairway and tried to hit every green.”

Three more players qualified and are playing in this week's event. Katie Sisler of Kailua, Hawaii, shot a 79, Victoria Fallgren of Lakewood, Calif., shot an 80, and Andrea Waters of Jamul, Calif., shot an 81 to qualify. Michelle Park of Los Angeles, shot a 77 and opted to take one AJGA Tournament Exemption in lieu of playing in this week's event.
