Three-way tie for second at 1-under-par 71

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Derek Fribbs of Castle Rock, Colo., carded a 6-under-par 66 Saturday to capture the lead after the first round of the Medicus Preseason Junior at Albuquerque.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Medicus Preseason Junior at Albuquerque is a 36-hole stroke play event being held at the University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course. The 84-player field features players from 20 states and Canada. The course is being played at 6,881 yards.

Coming into the tournament Saturday, Fribbs said he was working on his mental game and playing relaxed which seemed to pay off.

“I didn't lose focus after my bogey,” Fribbs said, referring to his fourth hole of the day.

Fribbs responded with a birdie on No. 15, his sixth hole of the day to record a 1-under-par 35 on his first nine. He then carded five birdies on the back nine for a 5-under-par 31.

“I felt the best on holes where I had a 12-footer or less,” Fribbs said.

To continue his hot play, Fribbs said he wanted to work on his driver for Sunday's final round.

Payne Wilkie of Austin, Texas, David Lowe of Paradise Valley, Ariz., and Bogart Strauss of Rancho Mirage, Calif., are tied for second, each carding 1-under-par 71s. In a four-way-tie for fifth after shooting even-par for the day were Ben Esparza of Tucson, Ariz., Jake Hedge of Billings, Mont., Sam Saunders and Chandler Smith-Stetson, both of Albuquerque, N.M.
