FU, PUMARIEGA 5-UNDER-PAR AT TAYLOR WOODROW JUNIOR AT MAGNOLIA LANDING
NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. — Zhong Yang Fu of Bradenton, Fla., and Andres Pumariega of Miami, both shot 5-under-par 67s Tuesday to share the lead in the Boys Division at the Taylor Woodrow Junior at Magnolia Landing. In the Girls Division, Christina Miller of Bradenton, Fla., carded 1-under-par 35 and even-par 36 on the front and back nine, respectively, to take the lead with an opening round 71.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Taylor Woodrow Junior at Magnolia Landing is a 54-hole stroke play event being held at The Golf Club at Magnolia Landing. The 84-player field features players from 15 states, the Cayman Islands, Switzerland and Poland. The Girls Division is playing The Golf Club at Magnolia Landing at 6,043 yards, while the Boys Division is playing it at 6,843 yards.
Fu managed to birdie every par 5 on the course en route to a spot atop the leaderboard.
“My drives were long and straight and that made it easy to play the par 5's,” Fu said. “As long as I stay calm tomorrow it will be OK.”
Pumariega, who birdied four holes on the front nine, credited good putting as crucial to his success.
“My putting was on today and my swing was a lot better than before,” Pumariega said. “Hopefully tomorrow I'll play well and just take it one shot at a time.”
Tyler McCumber of Ponte Vedra, Fla., who carded a 4-under-par 68, is currently in third place in the Boys Division. In a five-way tie for fourth, all recording 3-under-par 69s, are Phillip Choi of Orlando, Fla., Joe David of Madison, Tenn., Devin Patel of Celebration, Fla., Ian McConnell of Riverview, Fla., and Payne Denman of Riverwatch, Tenn.
For the Girls Division, Miller fired eight birdies on her way to the first-round lead. Despite her solid performance, Miller said she was still a little disappointed in her play.
“I just got a little antsy going into those last five holes,” Miller said. “Tomorrow I'll just try and play more conservatively and hit some more fairways.”
Behind Miller in second place is Michelle Shin of Cape Coral, Fla., with a 1-over-par 73. In a tie for third in the Girls Division are Nicole Agnello of Longwood, Fla., and Melissa Edmonson of Coral Gables, Fla., who both shot 2-over-par 74s.
