TALLEY SETS NEW WOMEN'S COMPETITIVE-COURSE RECORD TO LEAD GIRLS DIVISION

Fuller and Bowen Take Early Boys Division Lead in SAP Junior Open

Avon, Ohio β€” Emma Talley of Princeton, Ky., shot a 3-under-par 69 Tuesday to lead the Girls Division first round of the SAP Junior Open at Red Tail Golf Club. Talley's low round is the new women's competitive-course record for Red Tail Golf Club. Matt Fuller of Clarkston, Mich., and Wilson Bowen of Winnetka, Ill., shot 2-under-par 70s to lead the Boys Division.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the SAP Junior Open is being held at Red Tail Golf Club. The tournament field consists of 78 boys and 24 girls from 21 states and one foreign country. The Boys Division is being played at 6,809 yards and the Girls Division is at 5,967 yards.

Talley avoided trouble the whole round and recorded birdies on Nos. 6, 10, 13, and 14. Talley admitted she got a few lucky bounces today, but feels good about her game. While she's happy about her performance and the record, she knows there is work left to do.

β€œIn my mind I thought I could have a good round, but I tried not to obsess over it,” Talley said. β€œI have to focus and know that today was the just the first day and there's two days left. I have to keep practicing and stay on my game.”

Other leaders in the Girls Division are Tessa Teachman of Baton Rouge, La., and Meredith Swanson of Roanoake, Va., who both carded 1-under-par 71s and sit two shots back.

In the Boys Division, Fuller felt pretty confident about his round after making birdies on four of the first six holes. He felt the course was playing easy and under perfect conditions. Fuller played mistake-free golf for most of his round, his only misstep being a quadruple bogey on No. 15. Fuller was able to rebound and birdie the par-4 No. 16. Fuller is looking to continue his strong play for the rest of tournament, especially his short game.

β€œMy putter was working today, I only had 26 putts,” Fuller said. β€œI just have to keep doing what I did today and avoid making large numbers.”

Bowen said he hit the ball really well, hitting most of the fairways and 16 greens. He admitted to having some sloppy bogeys, but felt he played solid overall. Tomorrow he knows he needs to continue hitting the greens and making his putts.

Sam Jandel of Dayton, Ohio, Jack Schultz of Whitefish Bay, Wis., and Wes Denny of Cincinnati, sit two back of the leaders after carding even-par 72s in the first round of the Boys Division.
