GRIBBLE FIRES 7-UNDER-PAR 65 TO GRAB LEAD AT FOOTJOY BOYS INVITATIONAL
Roach and Hu lurk one shot back at 6-under-par at Forest Oaks Country Club
GREENSBORO, N.C. — Cody Gribble of Dallas, Texas, sits atop the leaderboard after the first round of the FootJoy Boys Invitational with a 7-under-par 65. One shot off the lead are Wes Roach of Knoxville, Tenn., and Mu Hu of Shen Zhen, China.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the sixth-annual FootJoy Boys Invitational is a 72-hole stroke play event being held at Forest Oaks Country Club. The 99-player field features players from 24 states and seven countries. The course is being played at 7,280 yards. Past champions of this event include Seung-Su Han, Brian Harman, Daniel Woltman and Andrew Yun.
Gribble capped off his 7-under-par round with a long putt for birdie on No. 18. Knowing that he was tied for the lead on No. 18 green, Gribble wanted to sink the putt. His putting was steady early in the round, including a 30-foot putt on No. 9 that gave him momentum for the rest of his day.
“My putting definitely showed up today,” Gribble said. “It feels good to put myself into contention for tomorrow. The competition here is always the best. The AJGA runs the best tournaments and the courses are always in perfect shape.”
Roach and Hu shot 6-under-par 66s to finish the round tied for second place. Tom Hoge of Fargo, N.D., and David Sanders of Mt. Laurel, N.J., are two strokes back after shooting opening round 5-under-par 67s.
