CHO, DOYLE SHOOT EVEN-PAR 72 TO MEDAL AT SRIXON QUALIFIER
Lee medals in Girls Division on Valley Course at Robinson Ranch

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. β€” Andrew Cho of La Crescenta, Calif., and Kevin Doyle of Coto de Caza, Calif., each shot even-par 72 Sunday to medal in the Boys Division of the Hanmi Bank Junior Open Srixon Qualifier on the Valley Course at the Robinson Ranch Golf Club. Patricia Lee medaled in the Girls Division with a 5-over-par 77 to win by one stroke.

The Hanmi Bank Junior Open Srixon Qualifier, conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, featured 80 boys and 20, girls ages 12-18, playing for admittance into the Hanmi Bank Junior Open. The boys tees were set at 6,864 and the girls tees were set at 5,910.

Cho said Sunday marked the first time he has medaled in an AJGA event. He knocked down two birdies and two bogeys on his way to medaling and qualifying to play in the open championship.

β€œI was just hoping to qualify, let alone win,” he said. β€œI hit it short, but straight. I hope I can play the same way throughout the rest of the tournament as I did today.”

Doyle also medaled for the first time on Sunday, and it was only his third AJGA sponsored event. Although he medaled, Doyle chose to take one Tournament Exemption for an AJGA event rather than play in the Hanmi Bank Junior Open.

β€œI had never played this course before today, but knew the course was going to be tight and narrow,” Doyle said. β€œI figured anything under 77 would be a good score today, so I am very happy with my 72.”

Also qualifying for the Hanmi Bank Junior Open were John Jong Yeop Lim of Torrance, Calif., Alexander Choi of Beverly Hills, Calif., Jae Kang of Irvine, Calif., Seiji Liu of Beverly Hills, Calif., Nick Lerner of Playa del Rey, Calif., Reid Hutchinson of Encinitas, Calif., Matthew Siporin of Tarzana, Calif., Christopher Rendler of Manhattan Beach, Calif., Shane Blanchard of Simi Valley, Calif., Marshall Colby of Thousand Oaks, Calif., Danny Katz of Simi Valley, Calif., and Gregory Petchakan of Encino, Calif.

Patrick Cantlay of Los Alamitos, Calif., Nick Thomas of Westlake Village, Calif., and Chris Doyle of Thousand Oaks, Calif., all qualified to play in the championship, but chose to take one Tournament Exemption instead.

In the Girls Division, Lee topped Emily Tubert of Burbank Calif., by only one stroke to earn medalist honors and accept one Tournament Exemption for other AJGA events. Lee is another player who earned her first medalist title on Sunday.

β€œI like golf because I only have to rely on myself to do well,” Lee said. β€œWhen the course got tough out there today, I had to keep telling myself to keep hitting good shots and to make my putts. I like that I am responsible for that.”

Also qualifying to play in the Hanmi Bank Junior Open were Katia Joo of Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., Li-Ting Weng of Hacienda Heights, Calif., Sarah Elliot of Dove Canyon, Calif., and Marika Liu of Beverly Hills, Calif.

Tubert will also qualified for the championship field but chose to take one Tournament Exemption, as did Stacy Kim of Yorba Linda, Calif.
