THREE-WAY TIE FOR FIRST IN BOYS DIVISION AT TEDESCO COUNTRY CLUB
Jo in contention for win in Girls Division with 4-over-par 74

MARBLEHEAD, Mass.,- After the first round of the Fidelity Investments Junior Classic, Mark Pollak of San Antonio, Texas, Thomas McCarthy of Tolland, Conn., and Gene Yang of East Brunswick, N.J., all share the lead for the Boys Division by firing even-par 70s. Eunae Jo of Ridgewood, N.J., leads the Girls Division by carding a 4-over-par 74.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Fidelity Investments Junior Classic is a 54-hole stroke play event held at Tedesco Country Club. The 84-player field features players from 16 states and British Columbia. The par-70 course is being played at 6,433 yards for the Boys Division and 5,796 yards for the Girls Division.

When describing his round, Pollak said his ball striking and putting are what helped him score low.

“I birdied No. 9 and it put me in a good spot,” Pollak said. “It put me back to even to start fresh on the back nine.”

In addition to a birdie on No. 9, Pollak birdied Nos. 2, 12 and 18, giving him an even-par 34 on the front nine and an even-par 36 on the back nine.

McCarthy said he felt like his round got started when he birdied Nos. 8 and 9, giving him 1-under-par 33 on the front nine. He scored 1-over-par 37 on the back nine.

Also coming into the clubhouse with an even-par 70, Yang said his plan for staying in the lead is to make more putts and keep his momentum going.

“I was putting well,” Yang said. “I made more birdies than I expected but I also made more bogeys.”

Yang recorded birdies on Nos. 3, 6, 13 and 17 to give him an even-par 34 on the front nine and an even-par 36 on the back nine.

In fourth place is Eric Lodge of Houston, posting a 1-over-par 71. Tied for fifth are Benjamin Cohen of Pittsburgh, Pa., David Pastore of Greenwich, Conn., Andrew Kay of Pittsford, N.Y., Bradley Kushner of Mendham, N.J., Michael Cheng of Woodbury, N.Y., and Jeff Hatten of Farmington, Conn., all recording 3-over-par 73s.

In the Girls Division, Jo said it is really exciting to be playing her first AJGA event. She said her goal for staying in the lead is to not think about winning and focus on each shot.

“I saved a lot of par putts,” Jo said. “The greens are tough so you have to be smart in your club choice.”

Coming into the clubhouse two strokes behind the leader is Kate Durnan of Mendham, N.J., scoring a 6-over-par 76. In a three-way tie for third are Alexis Holmes of West Chester, Pa., Caroline Sweet of Bowie, Md., and Harin Lee of Bayside, N.Y., all posting 7-over-par 77s.
