Cho leads Girls Division by one stroke

MARBLEHEAD, Mass.- After the second round of the Fidelity Investments Junior Classic, Thomas McCarthy of Tolland, Conn., leads the Boys Division at Tedesco Country Club with a 2-over-par 142 tournament total. Christine Cho of La Crescenta, Calif., leads the Girls Division posting a 12-over-par 152 tournament total.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Fidelity Investments Junior Classic is a 54-hole stroke play event held at Tedesco Country Club. The 89-player field features players from 16 states and British Columbia. The par-70 course is being played at 6,433 yards for the Boys Division and 5,796 for the Girls Division.

McCarthy said a 2-over-par 72 has been his goal everyday. After firing an even-par 70, Tuesday and a 2-over-par Wednesday, his goal has placed him in the lead.

“Somehow I came out with a 72 today,” McCarthy said. “If I shoot that tomorrow, I like my chances.”

McCarthy said birdies on Nos. 8 and 9, his last two holes of the day, motivated him to finish the tournament strong.

Michael Kania of Haverford, Pa., and Eric Lodge of Houston, are tied for second carding 4-over-par 144 tournament totals. Gene Yang of East Brunswick, N.J., Mark Pollak, of San Antonio and Garrett Arnold of Concord, Mass., are all tied for fourth recording 5-over-par 145 tournament totals.

In the Girls Division, Cho said she had no idea she would be leading coming into the clubhouse. After playing the course twice, Cho said she played a little differently Wednesday.

“I decided to play more aggressive and avoid trouble areas,” Cho said.

With a birdie on No. 13, Cho said her driver felt especially good and keeps her motivated to play her best overall game going into the final round Thursday.

Harin Lee of Bayside, N.Y., is in second place with a 13-over-par 153 tournament total. Eunae Jo of Ridgewood, N.J., is currently in third carding a 14-over-par 154 tournament total.
