SEAL BEACH, Calif. — Reid Hutchinson of Encinitas, Calif., medaled in the Boys Division of the Srixon Qualifier for the CORE Realty Holdings Junior at Old Ranch Sunday with a score of 2-under-par 70. Veronica Valerio of Temecula, Calif., medaled in the Girls Division at 1-over-par 73.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Srixon Qualifier for the CORE Realty Holdings Junior at Old Ranch was an 18-hole stroke play event featuring 80 boys and 20 girls, ages 12-18. Five states and two foreign countries were represented with 59 players from California. The event was held at the Old Ranch Country Club with boys tees set at 6,701 yards and girls tees set at 5,873 yards.

Sunday marked the second week in a row that Hutchinson qualified for an AJGA Open event. He qualified for the Hanmi Bank Junior Open at Robinson Ranch Golf Club last week and finished in the top 50 percent in the championship.

“Last week gave me an idea of what I needed to do today to get into this tournament,” Hutchinson said. “Now I just want to keep my game how it is; hit greens, hope for birdies, and make pars.”

Also qualifying for the CORE Realty Holdings Junior at Old Ranch were Jace Merlo of Fresno, Calif., Robert Nicanor of San Diego, Calif., Justin Edwards of Westlake Village Calif., Ronald Wood of Yuma, Ariz., Arthur Chung of Las Vegas, Paul McNamara III of Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., Thomas Moore of Huntington Beach Calif., Brent Duclos of Moorpark, Calif., Travis Bregman of Newhall, Calif., Bryan Bergna of Riverside, Calif., and Cole Pensanti of Oak Park, Calif., who qualified in a nine-player sudden-death playoff.

Cameron Tennant of Woodland Hills, Calif., also qualified for the tournament with a 1-under-par 71, but chose to accept one Tournament Exemption instead of playing in the championship.

In the Girls Division, Valerio said it was a satisfying feeling to know she qualified for the CORE Realty Holdings Junior at Old Ranch because the championship field is so strong. Although she finished at only 1-over-par, she said she was unsure of her chances of qualifying for the championship.

“I thought the cut would be under par, but the wind picked up and made it tough for all of us,” Valerio said. “Oh wow, it feels good.”

Dorothy Schwartz of San Jose, Calif., also qualified for the championship at 2-over-par 74.
