IM WINS IN PLAYOFF AT CORE REALTY HOLDINGS JUNIOR AT OLD RANCH
Miller wins first AJGA event at Old Ranch Country Club

SEAL BEACH, Calif. — Michael Jae Woo Im of Fullerton, Calif., won the Boys Division of the CORE Realty Holdings Junior at Old Ranch Friday at 3-under-par 213 for his first AJGA victory. In the Girls Division, Piper Miller of Laguna Beach, Calif., shot 1-over-par 73 in the final round to win by two strokes with a three-day total of 1-over-par 217.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the CORE Realty Holdings Junior at Old Ranch was a 54-hole stroke play event featuring 63 boys and 21 girls, ages 12-18. Five states and two foreign countries were represented with 71 players from California. The event was held on the par-72 Old Ranch Country Club, with boys tees set at 6,772 yards and girls tees set at 5,873 yards.

Im's road to victory at Old Ranch was not an easy one. He said his ball striking during the final round was the worst he has seen all summer, and Ramsey Sahyoun of Reseda, Calif., put pressure on Im with a 5-under-par 67 in the final round to force Im into a sudden-death playoff that lasted two holes.

“Overall I feel good, but it was the first two days that saved me,” Im said. “I was confident I could win here when the tournament began, but I only hit four fairways and ten greens today. I thank my parents for not giving up on me so I wouldn't give up on myself.”

Sahyoun finished in second place with a 3-under-par 213, and Tyler Raber of El Macero, Calif., took third place at 2-under-par 214. Tied for fourth were Thomas Moore of Huntington Beach, Calif., Patrick Cantlay of Los Alamitos, Calif., and Tyler Weir of Carlsbad, Calif., at even-par 216.

In the Girls Division, Miller came into the final round tied with Nara Kim of Diamond Bar, Calif., at even-par, but two birdies on the front nine gave her the push she needed to hang on to the lead to the end. Miller, who will be attending Stanford University in the fall on a golf scholarship, said her junior golf career has taught her a lot about patience and character.

“You really know you've become a player when you can walk off the course after a 69 or an 84 and have the same attitude,” Miller said. “It feels like this win has been long due, but I'm just happy to finish my junior golf career and finally win one.”

Kim finished in second place at 3-over-par 219, and Veronica Valerio of Temecula, Calif., finished in third place at 7-over-par 223.
