MEDALIST HONORS SHARED BY THREE AT TEXARKANA GOLF RANCH
Veerman, Markiewicz and Mabrey finish at 149 in Medicus Preseason Junior at Texarkana
TEXARKANA, Texas — Johannes Veerman of Sugar Land, Texas, Mike Markiewicz of Knoxville, Tenn., and Matthew Mabrey of Little Rock, Ark., shared tri-medalist accolades with scores of 5-over-par 149s at the Medicus Preseason Junior at Texarkana at Texarkana Golf Ranch Sunday.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Medicus Preseason Junior at Texarkana was a 36-hole stroke play event held at Texarkana Golf Ranch. The tournament field consisted 78 boys, ages 12-18, from 16 states. The par-72 course was played at 6,545 yards.
Veerman entered the final round tied for the lead at even-par. He made the turn at 4-over-par 40 before making eight pars to finish with a 5-over-par 77.
“I wasn't hitting the ball bad, I just struggled with my putting on the front nine,” Veerman said. “I tried to give myself a chance by hitting my shots close to the hole, but I was not making putts.”
Markiewicz was 1-under-par in his final round until making double-bogeys on Nos. 16 and 18 to card a 3-over-par 75. He credits his mental game as what kept his round intact.
“I grinded hard today,” Markiewicz said. “The course hit me and I had to fight back. I was able to compete even though I was not playing my best.”
The key moment during his round was an eagle on the par-5 8th hole.
“I was trying to lay up with my hybrid, but the ball bounced left. It rolled on the green and I was able to make the putt.”
Like Markiewicz, Mabrey was also 1-under-par entering the final two holes. After making birdie on No. 16, Mabrey double-bogeyed the par-3 17th hole before making par on his final hole.
“The key moment of my round was on No. 16. I hit a sand wedge within two feet and made the putt to get myself to 1-under-par,” Mabrey said.
Rounding out the top-five were William Dusenbury of League City, Texas and Collin Pratt of Santa Fe, N.M., tied for fourth at 6-over-par 150s.
