ARMSTRONG, CAPPS TOP FIELD AT CHATEAU ELAN
Wright coasts to 10 stroke victory in first AJGA event

BRASELTON, Ga. — Lucas Armstrong, 15, of Church Hill, Tenn., and Miller Capps, 14, of Seneca, S.C., shot final-round scores of 3-under-par 68 and 1-under-par 70 respectively to earn co-medalist honors in the Boys Division at the Medicus Preseason Junior at Chateau Elan Monday. Kendall Wright, 17, of Suwanee, Ga., shot a final-round even-par 71 to win the Girls Division.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Medicus Preseason Junior at Chateau Elan was a 36-hole stroke play event held at Chateau Elan — Chateau Course. The tournament field consisted of 72 boys and 24 girls, ages 12 to 18, from 15 states. The Boys Division played the par-71 layout at 6,750 yards, while the Girls Division played the course at 5,915 yards.

Both Armstrong and Capps credited their solid play in the closing round to more accuracy off the tee and hitting more greens in regulation. Armstrong and Capps finished the event with totals of even-par 142.

“I sprayed the ball all over the place yesterday,” Capps said. “I kept it on the greens today and that helped me.”

Armstrong began his round slowly with a disappointing bogey on No. 2, but quickly bounced back with a birdie on the third hole.

“I hit the green in two [on No. 15] and that helped to get me going,” Armstrong said.

Rounding out the Boys Division were Patrick Sawrey of Smithfield, N.C., Matthew Cahill of Boca Raton, Fla., and Jimmy Lloyd III of Clermont, Ga., finished tied for third with totals of 1-over-par 143s.

Wright, a local competitor, registered two bogeys and two birdies in the final round for a tournament total of 4-under-par 138. She credited her impressive play to friendly tee shots and family and friends who came out to support her.

“When they showed up, I made a birdie so I think they had something to do with it,” Wright said.

Bonnie Hu of Fremont, Calif., finished in second place after shooting a tournament total 69-79 — 148. Katie Kirk of Davidson, N.C., finished third with a total of 10-over-par 152.
