KEGERREIS, JONES CO-MEDAL TO QUALIFY FOR NEW CASTLE
Theinthong wins first AJGA Qualifier and will play in first AJGA open event

HERMITAGE, Pa. — Kyle Kegerreis of Chambersburg, Pa., and Logan Jones of Dublin, Ohio shared medalist honors at even-par 68 in the AJGA Junior at New Castle Qualifier Sunday at Tam O'Shanter Golf Course. In the Girls Division, Banchalee Theinthong of Bangkok, Thailand medaled at 4-over-par 72 to win her first AJGA Qualifier.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA Junior at New Castle Qualifier was a 17-hole stipulated stroke-play round played at the Tam O'Shanter Golf Course. The qualifier field consisted of 100 players, 84 boys and 16 girls from 15 states, Canada and Thailand. The Boys Division was played at a par-68 5,967 yards and the Girls Division at 5,498 yards.

Kegerreis and Jones both used similar strengths to finish atop the leaderboard at the end of the day.

“I started out by hitting 11 greens in a row,” Jones said. “That helped me to build a lot of confidence and gave me a lot of opportunities to putt.”

Sunday being his 16th birthday, Jones looks forward to competing this week at New Castle.

“I had five birdies today, hit a lot of fairways and putted pretty well, so I can't complain,” he said.

Kegerreis used an eagle on No. 11 to spark his round and finish solid on the day.

“I was all over the hole today,” Kegerreis said. “I struggled a little off the tee but my irons were pretty solid and that kept me in it.”

Also qualifying in the Boys Division were: Stephen LaRouere, of Northville, Mich., Michael Klaric III of Hermitage, Pa., Greg Schmaus of Upper Saddle River, N.J., Tyber Lustig of Belle Vernon, Pa., Michael Birmingham of Ashburn, Va., Michael Opsitnick of Avon, Ohio, Anthony Paladino of Upper St. Clair, Pa., Alexander Waesche of Timonium, Md., Bradley Trice of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Austin Romeo of Erie, Pa., and Matthew Kreider of Westlake, Ohio.

In addition, Kurtis Straw of Johnstown, Pa., Bradley Yosaitis of Honolulu, and Lance Semich of McKees Rocks, Pa., all qualified via sudden-death playoff after rounds of 8-over-par 74.

David Tepe of Liberty Township, Ohio, Robbie Denove of Pittsburgh, Ryan Prokay of Grove City, Pa., Jim Davis of Wexford, Pa., Josh Lee of Orange Park, Fla., Nicholas Adkins of Ashland, Ohio, Tyler Wingo of Fairfax, Va., Trevor Grigg of Novi, Mich., and A.J. Cadamagnani of Athens, Ohio all qualified but opted to take a Tournament Exemption in lieu of playing in this week's event.

Theinthong will play in her first AJGA open event this week after finishing one-stroke ahead of Crystal Lee of Mahwah, N.J., and Harin Lee of Bayside, N.Y., who both shot 5-over-par 73 to qualify for the event this week.

“I got up and down a lot today so that kept me going,” Theinthong said. “My driver struggled a little bit so I will be working on that before I play this week,” she said.

Also qualifying in the Girls Division but choosing to take a Tournament Exemption rather than play in this week's event was Kendall Allen of Pittsburgh.
