MCCARTHY FULL SPEED AHEAD TO VICTORY AT
JUNIOR ALL-STAR AT PETERSBURG
Feng continues to dominate field

PETERSBURG, Va. β€” After a phenomenal second-round 4-under-par 68, Denny McCarthy, 15, of Burtonsville, Md., managed to do it all over again in the final round of the Junior All-Star at Petersburg. His final-round 68 gave him a tournament total 8-under-par 208 and a three-stroke victory in the Boys Division. In the Girls Division, Yueer Cindy Feng, 12, of Orlando, Fla., maintained her second-round lead to finish in first place at 3-over-par 219.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Junior All-Star at Petersburg was a 54-hole stroke play event at the Country Club of Petersburg. The 95-player field featured juniors from 23 states and Canada. The Boys Division played the par-72 Country Club of Petersburg at 6,786 yards, while the Girls Division played the course at 6,004 yards.

McCarthy carded five birdies en route to victory; four of which were on the back nine.

β€œI had a solid front nine but I got hot [again] on the back nine,” McCarthy said.

This victory is McCarthy's first in his AJGA career and he attributed it to having a good support system.

β€œThis experience was awesome,” McCarthy said. β€œI stayed with friends of my family and they made it fun. So, I was relaxed and calm each day and able to play my game.”

Grayson Murray of Raleigh, N.C., finished in second at 5-under-par 211. Kyle Wilshire of Georgetown, Ky., and Motin Yeung of Orlando, Fla., finished in third and fourth respectively at 4-under-par 212 and 3-under-par 213. Ben Fogler of Elgin, S.C., Daniel Berger of Jupiter, Fla., and David Saka of Waipahu, Hawaii, all finished tied for fifth at 2-under-par 214.

Feng's round was steady and included birdies on Nos. 4 and 18.

β€œI drove the ball okay and putted okay,” Feng said. β€œI had long putts and not a lot of birdie chances so I just kept making par.”

Looking ahead, Feng aims to stay focused on improving her game.

β€œI go into each event expecting to beat myself,” Feng said. β€œI just want to work on being better.”

Finishing in second, five strokes off the lead at 8-over-par 224, was Shannon Aubert of Augusta, Ga. Rounding out the top three were Janie Jackson of Huntsville, Ala., and Linda Luo of Richmond, British Columbia who tied at 14-over-par 230.
