FU TAKES ONE-SHOT LEAD AT LESSING’S AJGACLASSIC

Chang overcame rain delay to finish even-par at Rockaway Hunting Club

LAWRENCE, N.Y. —  Zhong Yang Fu of Bradenton, Fla., enters the second round in the lead for the Boys Division after carding a 4-under-par 66 at the Lessing's AJGA Classic Tuesday. Olivia Chang of San Lorenzo, Calif., shot even-par in the first round to take the lead in the Girls Division

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Lessing's AJGA Classic is a 54-hole stroke play event being held at Rockaway Hunting Club. The tournament field consists of 75 Boys and 24 Girls, ages 12-18, from 16 states and four countries. The par-70 course is being played at 6,333 yards for the Boys Division and 5,742 yards for the Girls Division.

Fu started out strong on the front nine after dropping birdies on Nos. 1, 5, 6 and 7 to card 3-under-par 32. He then added two more birdies on the back nine on Nos, 16 and 18 en route to finish 1-under-par 34 on the back nine.

“On the No. 16 par-3 I hit my tee shot short and then chipped in for birdie after posting a bogey on No. 15 so I was excited for the birdie,” said Fu.

Fu posted only 28 putts and hit most fairways and greens to contribute to his first round lead by one stroke.

David Pastore of Greenwich, Conn., and Charlie Marshall of Lake Forest, Ill both sit in second after carding first round scores of 3-under-par 67. Robert Gibbons of Wappingers Falls, N.Y. enters the second round in sole possession of fourth place with a 2-under-par 68. Rounding out the boys scorers in a tie for fifth place are Luke Edelman of Mahwah, N.J. and Sean Jones of Chicago, at 1-under-par 69.

In the Girls Division, Chang leads by one stroke and carded birdies on Nos. 2, 5, 10, 15 and 16.

“I started off with a par and a birdie, which was really cool because I usually don't start a round off with a birdie,” said Chang.

After Chang hit her drive on No. 18 stormy weather rolled in forcing a one hour and 26 minute rain delay.

“I was happy with my straight drive on No.18, then after the rain delay I had my first miss hit all day which ended up in the right bunker, from there I hit the pin then made a putt for par,” said Chang. “It was the craziest par.”

Jaye Marie Green of Boca Raton, Fla., tied for second at 1-over-par 71. In at tie for third is Kyung Kim of Chandler, Ariz., at 3-over-par 73.
