LEISURE AND VINCE STAND ON TOP IN NEW CASTLE
Schiavone leads AJGA Junior at New Castle by two strokes in Girls Division

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Patrick Leisure of Charlottesville, Va., and Ryan Vince of Charlotte, N.C., currently hold the first-round lead at the AJGA Junior at New Castle after each shooting a 2-under-par 70 Tuesday. Stani Schiavone of Bangor, Pa., carded a 6-over-par 78 to lead the competition by two strokes in the Girls Division.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA Junior at New Castle is a 54-hole stroke play event held at New Castle Country Club. The 98-player field features players from 19 states, Canada, South Korea and Taiwan. The Boys Division is playing the par-72 New Castle Country Club at 6,615 yards, while the Girls Division is playing at 5,960 yards.

Leisure started his round off right with birdies on Nos. 2 and 3. He overcame the demanding greens to card two more birdies on the day, but his par on No. 16 was a moment he was especially proud of in his round.

“On No. 16 I hit a drive left and had to punch back out,” Leisure said. “I hit a 4-iron onto the green and made par. It was nice to salvage a par after a bad drive. Hopefully I'll drive a little better tomorrow and keep the speed going on the greens.”

Also leading the Boys Division is Vince, who got a rough start to his round after he three-putted two of his first four holes. He bounced back to shoot a back-nine 3-under-par 33 with three straight birdies starting on No. 10 and another birdie on No. 18 to close out his round.

“I hit a perfect 6-iron on No. 10 to five inches to get my momentum going,” Vince said. “Finishing strong with a birdie on No. 18 is a good way to go into tomorrow and hopefully another round under par will keep me on top.”

Sitting two strokes behind the leaders at even-par 72 is Zhong Yang Fu of Bradenton, Fla. Tied for fourth at 1-over-par 73 are Grant Weaver of Wooster, Ohio, Denny McCarthy of Burtonsville, Md., and Nicholas Palladino of Highland Heights, Ohio.

In the Girls Division, Schiavone sat at 4-over-par after her first two holes, but birdied No. 3 to get back on track.

“My round was pretty consistent other than some putting woes,” Schiavone said. “After my second shot on No. 3, I was embedded in the lip of the bunker. I hit it to eight feet and made the putt to get one stroke back.”

Rounding out the top three in the Girls Division are Deanna Song of Granger, Ind., and Mayko Chwen Wang of Taipei, Taiwan, who both carded 8-over-par 80s in the first round.
