FU WINS AJGA JUNIOR AT NEW CASTLE TO CAPTURE BACK-TO-BACK VICTORIES
Wang earns first AJGA win at New Castle Country Club

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Zhong Yang Fu of Bradenton, Fla., continued a winning streak Thursday as he claimed his second straight AJGA victory with a final-round 2-under-par 70 at the AJGA Junior at New Castle. He came into the week hot off a win at the Lessing's AJGA Classic and finished this week's tournament eight strokes ahead of the competition at 5-under-par 211. In the Girls Division Mayko Chwen Wang of Taipei, Taiwan received her first AJGA victory after shooting an 18-over-par 234.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA Junior at New Castle was a 54-hole stroke play event held at New Castle Country Club. The 98-player field featured players from 19 states, Canada, South Korea and Taiwan. The Boys Division played the par-72 New Castle Country Club at 6,615 yards, while the Girls Division played at 5,960 yards.

Fu came into the final round with a three-stroke lead, but three straight birdies by fellow competitor Denny McCarthy on Nos. 2, 3 and 4 pushed Fu to step up his game.

“I was a little scared after Denny got three birdies in a row, but I got birdies on Nos. 4, 6 and 7 so it was a good little comeback,” Fu said. “No. 7 was my turning point. It was the hardest hole and I was impressed I got a birdie. I got two shots back on the other players and started to play a little better.”

McCarthy of Burtonsville, Md., came in second at 3-over-par 219. Tied for third at 5-over-par 221 were Patrick Ross of Dunmore, Pa., and Grant Weaver of Wooster, Ohio. One stroke back in fifth were Connor Tendall of North Potomac, Md., Brett Patterson of McMinnville, Tenn., Alex Andrews of Kirtland, Ohio, and Zach Hartman of St. Simons Island, Ga., at 6-over-par 222.

Wang was looking for a victory as she came into the week with three top-10 finishes already this year. She started the day tied for first and edged ahead to win by one stroke.

“I couldn't tell if I would win coming into today, but I saved a lot of putts, kept my tempo and tried not to make mistakes I made the previous days,” Wang said. “On No. 11, the hardest hole for me, I was short of the green and chipped it to two feet. That was the hardest putt for par and I'm happy I made it.”

Juliet Vongphoumy of Providence, R.I., kept the competition close as she finished just behind Wang at 19-over-par 235. Tied in third place at 20-over-par 236 were Deanna Song of Granger, Ind., and Stani Schiavone of Bangor, Pa.
