Lloyd, Maguire Claim Second-Round Lead at Montverde Academy Junior All-Star Invitational
Sims increases lead to four shots in Girls Division

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. — Jack Maguire of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Alex Lloyd of Virginia Beach, Fla., each carded rounds in the 60s and are tied for the lead at 3-under-par after two rounds at the Montverde Academy Junior All-Star Invitational. Sierra Sims of Austin, Texas, increased her lead in the Girls Division and has a four-shot cushion heading into Monday's final round.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Montverde Academy Junior All-Star Invitational is a 54-hole stroke play event held at Mission Inn Resort & Club. The field features 54 boys and 24 girls, ages 12-15, from 21 states, Canada, Colombia and Mexico. The par-72 El Campeon course is being played at 6,718 yards for the Boys Division and 5,837 yards for the Girls Division.

Maguire, 15, recorded the flashiest round of the tournament, as his second-round 66 included six consecutive birdies (Nos. 10-15). After a putting lesson last week, Maguire said poor speed was the only thing that kept him from making more putts during the first round. The putting lesson paid off Sunday, as Maguire improved his speed and made several birdie putts from 10 to 25 feet en route to his 3-under-par total.

“Tomorrow, I'm going to play conservatively and hope that my putts will drop like they did today,” said Maguire, whose best finish of the season was a T4 showing at the Junior All-Star at Ballantyne.

Lloyd, 15, had a bit of flash in his round as well, as he hit a hybrid from 215 yards to three feet on the par-5 first hole (his 10th hole of the day). He said that he learned something earlier this season that helped him during Sunday's second round.

“I learned that I could play well and that sometimes all it takes is one or two good holes to get you going during a round,” said Lloyd, who finished third at the Woodward Video Junior at The Greenbrier.

Connor Black of Katy, Texas, shot a second-round 70 and is alone in third at 1-under-par. Six players are at 3-over-par and are tied for fourth: Thomas Lim of Moorpark, Calif.; Davis Womble of High Point, N.C.; Shotaro Ban of San Jose, Calif.; Ki Taek Lee of La Quinta, Calif.; Joshua Martin of Pinehurst, N.C.; and J.D. Tomlinson of Gainesville, Fla.

In the Girls Division, Sims, 13, was 3-under-par and bogey-free through 11 holes. At that point, she said the heat started to affect her, and she bogeyed four of her next five holes. Despite the late bogeys, Sims shot a 73 Sunday and is at 1-over-par for the tournament, four shots clear of the rest of the field.

“The par on my last hole was important,” Sims said. “I was trying to make par or better and not lose any more strokes than I had already lost.”

Marijosse Navarro of San Antonio, is second at 5-over-par, while Montverde Academy's Xin Wang of Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., is alone in third at 6-over-par.

Final-round tee times will run from 8:30 — 10:18 a.m. off the Nos. 1 and 10 tees at Mission Inn Resort & Club's El Campeon. For more information about the Montverde Academy Junior All-Star Invitational, please contact tournament headquarters at (352) 324-3923.
