Ramsey wins by one in Girls Division at Coosa Country Club

ROME, Ga. β€” Cody Shafer of Evans, Ga., won in the Boys Division with a three-round total of 7-under-par 206 to earn his first AJGA victory. Ashlan Ramsey of Bradenton, Fla., won the Girls Division after she finished with an even-par round of 71 and a three-day total of even-par 213.

The Burgett H. Mooney, Jr. Rome Classic was a 54-hole stroke play tournament conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Coosa Country Club in Rome, Ga. The event featured 72 boys and 26 girls, ages 12-18, from nine states and Colombia, New Zealand, Paraguay and the Philippines. The Boys Division played the par-71 course at 6,823 yards and the Girls Division at 6,030 yards.

Shafer birdied three of his first four holes and did not look back.

β€œI birdied Nos. 1 and 2. The front nine has been the best for me this week,” said Shafer. β€œI'm a lot more confident because I've been struggling this summer and its good to know that I've got it back.”

Finishing tied for second was Chase Koepka of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Carter Page of Waynesville, N.C. with three round totals of 4-under-par 209. Matt Cote of Palm Harbor, Fla., finished in fourth with a three-day total of 2-under-par 211. Rounding out the top five in the Boys Division was Sepp Straka of Valdosta, Ga., who finished fifth with a three-round total of even-par 213.

After a 1-over-par 37 on the front nine and losing her lead to Katie Kirk of Davidson, N.C., Ramsey shot a1-under-par 34 on the back nine to take the lead back from Kirk.

β€œIt feels good to actually win today,” said Ramsey. β€œI made some putts that I had to make to win.”

Katie Kirk of Davidson, N.C. finished second, one shot behind Ramsey after carding an even-par third round for a three-round total of 1-over-par 214. Janie Jackson of Huntsville, Ala., shot a third round 2-under-par 69 to finish in third place.
