Hometown Junior Leads After First-Round of AJGA Franklin Junior presented by Franklin American Mortgage Company
Tennessean leads Girls Division at Vanderbilt Legends Club

FRANKLIN, Tenn. — Michael Monroe of Franklin, Tenn. leads the Boys Division after a first-round 4-under-par 67. In the Girls Division, Kendall Martindale of Jefferson City, Tenn., leads after carding a 1-under-par 71.

The AJGA Franklin Junior presented by Franklin American Mortgage Company is a 54-hole stroke-play tournament conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Vanderbilt Legends Club — South Course. The field features 75 boys and 24 girls, ages 12-18, from 17 states and Mexico. The Boys Division is playing the par-71 course at 7,041 yards. The Girls Division is playing the par-72 course at 6,100 yards.

Monroe carded four birdies, including three in his last five holes, and no bogeys to lead by one heading into the second round. The hometown junior says everything was working well for him. He even says there was only one time in which a bogey was in the mix.

“The only time I threatened to make bogey was on No. 11,” Monroe said. “I hit it long over the green and had a pretty tough chip and I hit it to about 12-feet and I made the putt for par.”

Currently tied for second place after shooting a first-round 3-under-par 68 is Korey Ward of West Chester, Ohio and John Weyenberg of Menasha, Wis. Rounding out the top five after day one is Will Joiner of Brentwood, Tenn., Chandler Fischer of Nicholasville, Ky., and Ted Moon of Lilburn, Ga., who are all tied for fourth place after carding 2-under-par 69s.

In the Girls Division, another Tennessean has the lead. After birdying two of her first three holes and then carding 14 pars and one bogey, Martindale leads by one stroke. She hit all but one green in regulation and had just one three-putt.

“The first three holes set the tone,” Martindale said. “Then I just hit my irons great, hit greens and two-putted.”

Sarah Hicks of Gulf Breeze, Fla., is currently in second place after carding a first-round even-par 72. Rounding out the top three in the Girls Division after shooting 1-over-par 73s are Janie Jackson of Huntsville, Ala., Daffodil Sanchez of Mesa, Ariz., Gabriella Then of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., and Sarah Harris of Hermitage, Tenn., who are all tied for third.
