Humphrey Earns First Junior All-Star Win at the Penn State Golf Courses - Blue Course
White claims Girls Division win at the Junior All-Star at Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. β€” Theo Humphrey of Greenwich, Conn., fired a final round even-par 72 to earn a victory in the Boys Division with an 8-under-par 208. Alexandra White of Honolulu, Hawaii, maintained her focus throughout the week to win the Girls Division with a 10-over-par 226.

The Junior All-Star at Penn State was one of 10 events in the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy Junior All-Star Series. Specifically designed for boys and girls ages 12-15, the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy Junior All-Star Series presents opportunities for younger members to develop their skills and earn entry into AJGA Open tournaments. The Series concludes with the Montverde Academy Junior All-Star Invitational over Columbus Day weekend for winners and top finishers in Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy Junior All-Star Series events.

The Junior All-Star at Penn State was a 54-hole stroke play event with a cut after 36 holes conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at the Blue Course at Penn State Golf Courses. The 142-player field featured 110 boys and 32 girls, ages 12-18, from 20 states, Canada and Thailand. The Boys Division played the par-72 course at 6,709 yards while the Girls Division played at 5,970 yards.

Playing well all week, Humphrey shot a first round 66, a second round 70 and a final round 72 for an 8-under-par 208. Relying on his solid iron play, Humphrey was able to stick to his strategy.

β€œMy strategy was just not to make any big mistakes,” Humphrey said. β€œI just wanted to shoot even or better because I was pretty sure that was going to get the job done.”

Part of his strategy was to continue playing well on the par-5s. Humphrey went 4-under on No. 5 this week alone and was his favorite hole.

β€œOn No. 5 I was able to knock it on in two with an iron all three days and made two birdies and an eagle, so I was able to take advantage,” Humphrey said.

Playing in his first Junior All-Star, Humphrey said winning was an awesome feeling and was his goal coming into the event.

β€œIt feels great obviously,” Humphrey said. β€œThat was my goal coming into this week and to be able to achieve that really feels great.”

Finishing in second was Will Thomas of Cary, N.C., with a 1-under-par 215. In a three-way tie for third was Colton Wiggins of Indiana, Pa., Justin Pagila of Dublin, Calif., and Ian Holt of Stow, Ohio., all with 2-over-par 218.

Admitting that she didn't play her best golf in the final round, White said her putting and driving were her strengths and helped her card a 4-over-par 76 to capture the Girls Division by one stroke.

β€œI had plenty of pars, but I had way too many bogeys,” White said. β€œMy putting helped me out a lot and kept me from getting high numbers. My drives also kept me from any trouble.”

Coming off a second place finish at the Hilton Head Junior All-Star, White carded three birdies on the day including one at the par-5 No. 12, which White said was her favorite hole this week.

β€œNo. 12 helped me out all week,” White said. β€œI know I birdied it at least twice, so it was definitely useful.”

White said claiming her first AJGA win was a great feeling.

β€œIt's an honor to win one of these events because these are some of the biggest tournaments that I play,” White said. β€œIt's just another step to being better than I am and I hope to improve even more.”

In second place was Chayanid Prapassarangkul of Bangkok, Thailand, with an 11-over-par 227. Finishing in third was August Kim of Searingtown, N.Y., with a 12-over-par 228.
