Tomlinson Uses Bogey-free Round to Win AJGA Junior at Innisbrook
Meadow's luck evens out to take Girls Division at Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club

PALM HARBOR, Fla. — JD Tomlinson of Gainesville, Fla., used three birdies and no bogeys to shoot 68 with an overall 1-over-par 214 to win on the Innisbrook Copperhead Course. Stephanie Meadow of Jordanstown, Northern Ireland, shot a final round even-par 70 to capture the victory in the Girls Division with a 1-over-par 211.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA Junior at Innisbrook was a 54-hole stroke play event held at Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club. The 210-player field featured players from 30 states, and 5 foreign countries. The Boys Division played the Copperhead Course at 7,330 yards, while the Girls Division played the North Course at 5,800 yards.

Tomlinson fired his first bogey-free tournament round on his way to his first AJGA tournament victory. This win and the bogey-free round were meaningful to Tomlinson, however neither thought entered his mind during the final day.

“At one point on the back nine my dad said that I had a chance for a bogey-free round,” Tomlinson said. “After that, I knew I had a great shot at winning.”

Rounding out the Boys Division was Daniel Berger of Jupiter, Fla., who finished in second place with a 2-over-par 215. In third was Patrick Rodgers of Avon, Ind., shooting 3-over-par 216. Patrick Winther of Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., finished fourth with a 4-over-par 217, and Kyle Kochevar of Glen Ellyn, Ill., finished fifth with a 6-over-par 219.

Meadow, who now trains in the U.S., but is originally from Northern Ireland, used some of her Irish luck to bounce back after some unlucky breaks.

“I knew my luck was going to even out,” Meadow said. “I landed in a couple divots, but then I was able to chip one in later to balance that out.”

Luck aside, Meadow attributes her consistent weekend to her hard work during the winter.

“I worked really hard this off-season,” Meadow said. “It was nice to see that all my hard work paid off.”

Ginger Howard of Bradenton, Fla., shot a 3-over-par 213 to finish second in the Girls Division. In third was A.J. Newell of Tampa, Fla., who finished with a 5-over-par 215.

The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA provides valuable exposure for college golf scholarships, and has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 49 states and 30 countries. To ensure scholarship opportunities for all junior golfers who have the skill, the AJGA created the Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program to provide financial assistance to young players in need.

Titleist, the AJGA's National Sponsor, has been the catalyst and driving force behind the Association's success since 1989. Rolex Watch USA, which is in its third decade of AJGA support, became the inaugural AJGA Premier Partner in 2004. In 2007, after 12 years of support, Polo Ralph Lauren became the AJGA's second Premier Partner.

AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf. Former AJGA juniors have compiled more than 400 victories on the PGA and LPGA Tours. AJGA alumni include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Stewart Cink, Cristie Kerr, Paula Creamer and Morgan Pressel.

For more information about the AJGA Junior at Innisbrook, please contact AJGA National Headquarters at (770) 868-4200.

ACE

The Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program provides financial assistance to junior golfers who wish to play in AJGA events. Its goal is to give top-flight golf opportunities to young golfers regardless of financial resources. This program helps to fulfill the AJGA’s mission of developing young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf.

Leadership Links

What is Leadership Links?

Leadership Links is a new program whereby the AJGA is able to further its mission to help develop young men and women by teaching charitable giving skills and service-oriented practices at an early age. This program gives juniors all the tools necessary to donate their time, talent and resources to local charities and the AJGA youth development programs. Please click here to learn more about the program and the different opportunities available.
