Bernard Slides Into Top Spot After Rainy First Round of AJGA Junior at Quad Cities Talley leads Girls Division at Rock Island Arsenal Golf Club
ROCK ISLAND, Ill.—Michael Bernard of Huber Heights, Ohio, overcame a two hour and forty minute rain delay during the first round of play at the AJGA Junior at Quad Cities to take the lead in the Boys Division, scoring a 1-under-par 70. Looking for a repeat, last year’s champion Emma Talley of Princeton, Ky., leads the Girls Division with a 1-over-par 72.
The AJGA Junior at Quad Cities is a 54-hole stroke play tournament conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at the Rock Island Arsenal Golf Club in Rock Island, Ill. The 140-player field features 106 boys and 34 girls, ages 12-18, from 25 states, Canada, China and Thailand. The Boys Division is playing at 6,573 yards and the Girls Division is playing at 6,060 yards.
Bernard had a slippery front nine as he birdied the first two holes, bogeyed Nos.4,7, and 8, and ended it with another birdie to finish at even par on the front. Bernard’s low point on the back nine came when he bogeyed No.10 but came back strong with a birdie on No.12. He stayed consistent through the rest of course, hitting his fifth birdie on No.15, and finishing 1-under-par for the back nine and the round.
“It was a pretty tough day with the rain delay,” Bernard said. “Playing in the morning was probably harder than playing in the afternoon and I would have been happy with anything around par so I am definitely happy with what I got.”
Brock Bolton of Salem, Ill., Mitchell Homb of Dixon, Ill., Alex Carpenter of Westerville, Ohio, and Nick Huggins of Marietta, Ohio, are tied for second with even par 71s.
Talley, a two-time honorable mention Rolex Junior All-American, had a roller coaster day, carding a 2-over-par 38 for the front nine and 1-under par 34 on the back. As she made the turn, Talley credited the change in her game to better putting. Talley had two birdies for the day, including sinking a 25-foot putt on No.10. She was able to avoid tough course conditions with an afternoon tee time, but hopes to hit more fairways and see her score go down in the next round.
“I only hit five fairways and was behind trees all day but somehow I ended up shooting one over,” Talley said. “Of course I want to win it again and I need this win but my goal is to get a little better each day.”
Allisen Corpuz of Honolulu, Lauren English of Bloomington, Ill., and Kathy Sterling of Mokena, Ill., are tied for second with 2-over-par 73s.

Second-round tee times for the AJGA Junior at Quad Cities will run from 7-8:39 a.m. (first wave) and 11:30 a.m.-1:09 p.m. (second wave) off the Nos.1 and 10 tees at the Rock Island Arsenal Golf Club.
