Stewart Claims Third Victory in Her Final AJGA Tournament at McArthur Towel & Sports Future Legends Garrick goes low in final round to claim first AJGA victory at The Legend at Bristlecone
HARTLAND, Wis. — Alex Stewart of Peoria, Ariz., finished her American Junior Golf Association career with a bang earning a seven-stroke victory in the Girls Division of the McArthur Towel & Sports Future Legends. In the Boys Division, Jonathan Garrick of Atherton, Calif., saved his best for last as he fired a 4-under-par 66 in the final round to come from six shots back and pull ahead of the field at The Legend at Bristlecone.
The McArthur Towel & Sports Future Legends was a 54-hole stroke play tournament conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at The Legend at Bristlecone in Hartland, Wis. The tournament field consisted of 120 boys and girls ages 12-18 from 16 states. The Boys Division played the par-70 course at 6,773 yards while the Girls Division played at 5,970 yards.
Stewart, who held a five-stroke lead following the second round, had three birdies on her way to a 3-over-par 73 to finish at 5-over-par 214 for the tournament. She ends her AJGA career with three victories, nine top 10 finishes, and was a second team Rolex Junior All-American in 2009 and an honorable mention in 2008.
“I started playing AJGA in 2006—it has helped me get recognition from golf coaches, and I have made a lot of friends,” Stewart said, who is a University of Purdue commit. “This is my last one and I am glad I went out with a win.”
Behind the strength of an even-par 70 in the final round, Emily Tubert of Burbank Calif., jumped four spots in the leaderboard from the second round to finish tied for second. Joining Tubert in second place, and at 12-over-par 221 for the tournament, was Kris Yoo of Schaumburg, Ill.
Garrick finished with five birdies on the round and was able to make steady improvements each round following a 5-over-par 75 in the first round and 2-over-par 71 in the second round. Garrick was able to find his way to the front of the pack after starting the round tied for 18th.
“I feel pretty good because people probably didn't expect me to win coming into the final round,” Garrick said. “I knew myself that I was hitting it pretty well and if I went out there and shot a low score I would have a pretty good chance.”
Jacob Gould of Carmel, Ind., Kyle Perettine of Boca Raton, Fla., and Patipan Pipatpinyopong of Loves Park, Ill., tied for second place at 5-over-par 214 for the tournament. Tying for fifth place were KK Limbhasut of Loma Linda, Calif., Bobby Jacobs of Valparaiso, Ind., Corey Konieczki of Rockford, Ill., Charlie Netzel of Western Springs, Ill., and Collin Foster of Clive, Iowa, who all finished at 8-over-par 217 for the tournament.
The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA provides valuable exposure for college golf scholarships, and has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 49 states and 30 countries. To ensure scholarship opportunities for all junior golfers who have the skill, the AJGA created the Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program to provide financial assistance to young players in need.
Titleist, the AJGA's National Sponsor, has been the catalyst and driving force behind the Association's success since 1989. Rolex Watch USA, which is in its third decade of AJGA support, became the inaugural AJGA Premier Partner in 2004. In 2007, after 12 years of support, Polo Ralph Lauren became the AJGA's second Premier Partner.
AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf. Former AJGA juniors have compiled more than 400 victories on the PGA and LPGA Tours. AJGA alumni include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Stewart Cink, Cristie Kerr, Paula Creamer and Morgan Pressel.
