Herr Handles Green Mountain National Golf Course With Ease
Liu leads after first round of Killington Junior Golf Championship
KILLINGTON, Vt. — Zachary Herr of New Hope, Pa., took a strong lead in the Boys Division following the first round of the Killington Junior Golf Championship with a 6-under-par 65, one stroke away from tying the course record. Yu Liu of Beijing, China holds the top spot in the Girls Division with a 1-over-par 72.
The Killington Junior Golf Championship is a 54-hole stroke play tournament conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Green Mountain National Golf Course. The 99-player field features 75 boys and 24 girls, ages 12-18, from 17 states, China and Canada. The Boys Division is playing the par-71 course at 6,584 yards while the Girls Division is playing at 5,889 yards.
Herr relied on strong iron play and putting to help him tie his personal best on Tuesday. He marked seven birdies for the round, six of which were putts inside five feet.
“I played really well,” Herr said. “I hit 16 greens, sunk a couple putts for birdie. I'm very happy. It was definitely my best round all season.”
Dylan Healey of Franklin, Tenn., is in second with 3-under-par 68. Nick McLaughlin of New Castle, N.H., sits in third after carding a 2-under-par 69. Quinn Prchal of Glenview, Ill., Sean Bozuk of Burlington, Ontario, and Evan Russell of Essex Junction, Vt., are all tied for fourth with scores of even-par 71.
Liu leads the Girls Division by one stroke after medaling in Sunday's K12 Qualifier. Having a rough day off the tees, Liu was unable to find the fairways as often as she would have liked. However, confidence in her putting gave her a level head and saved her when she got in tough situations.
“I felt confident with my putting,” Liu said of how she stayed calm despite fairway troubles. “I putted better than Sunday and never missed a putt within three yards. Hopefully tomorrow I can be more consistent with my fairway woods.”
Isabel Southard of Sharon, Mass., and Alice Chen of Princeton, N.J., are tied for second at 2-over-par 73.
