Jutanugarn sisters dominate the leaderboard at Rolex Girls Junior Championship
Ariya Jutanugarn battles wind gusts to lead at Somerby Golf Club
Byron, Minn. — Ariya Jutanugarn of Bangkok, Thailand fired a low first-round score of 5-under-par 67 at the Rolex Girls Junior Championship, while her sister Moriya sits one stroke back in second.
The Rolex Girls Junior Championship is a 72-hole stroke play event conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at the Somerby Golf Club in Byron, Minn. The tournament field includes 95 girls, ages 12-18, from 17 states, Puerto Rico, and seven foreign countries (Japan, Colombia, Mexico, Argentina, the Philippines, Thailand and China). The Girls Division is playing the course at 6,122 yards.
Jutanugarn credited her successful round to her approach shots and short putts. She made a total of six birdies, two of which were back to back on Nos. 7 and 8.
“It feels good to be the leader today. Last year I was the leader for the first and second round, but the third round I didn't perform too well,” Jutanugarn said. I am going to have the same plan for tomorrow. "I am going to continue to try and make short putts. Tomorrow is going to be better than today.”
Moriya sits in second place with a score of 4-under-par 68. Kyung Kim of Chandler, Ariz., Yu Liu of Beijing, China, Victoria Tanco of Argentina, and Samantha Wagner of Windermere, Fla., are tied for third place each with a score of 3-under-par 69.
