Ghim leads the Boys Division with a 3-under-par 68 at McArthur Towel & Sports Future Legends
Weaver leads by one-stroke at the Legend at Bristlecone

HARTLAND, Wis. — Doug Ghim of Arlington Heights, Ill., carded an opening round 3-under-par 68 at the McArthur Towel & Sports Future Legends. In the Girls Division, Lindsey Weaver of Scottsdale, Ariz., sits atop the leaderboard as she recorded a 2-under-par 69 at The Legend at Bristlecone.

The McArthur Towel & Sports Future Legends is a 54-hole stroke play event conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at The Legend at Bristlecone in Hartland, Wis. The tournament field consists of 96 players from 13 states, Taiwan, South Korea, Canada, Thailand and China. The Boys Division is playing the par-71 course at 6,804 yards and the Girls Division is playing at 6,064 yards.

Doug Ghim totaled six birdies on the round. Ghim has already hoisted two trophies in his AJGA career, including last week's win at the Coca-Coca Junior Championship at Boyne Highlands. Ghim was positive that his score could've been better, but he wants to make improvements to continue to excel on the course.

“I left a couple of strokes out there, but other than that, as long I work on making more putts and hitting better drives then I'll be good for tomorrow,” Ghim said.

Ghim played against other good players, like last year's winner of the McArthur Towel & Sports Future Legends, Jonathan Garrick.

“It's always helpful to play with other good players because then we feed off of each other,” Ghim said.

All tied at even-par 71 for second place is Ian Mankoff of Lake Forest, Ill., Jonathan Garrick of Atherton, Calif., Voramate Aussarassakorn of Bangkok, Thailand, Joe Willis of Lake Forest, Ill., and John Langhoff of Pewaukee, Wis.

In the Girls Division, Weaver leads by one-stroke after carding four birdies in the first round. Weaver already has five AJGA victories in her career. Although Weaver played well in the opening round, she doesn't take this lead to heart.

“I'm not going to focus solely on being in the lead,” Weaver said. “I'm just going to make adjustments tomorrow in hopes of playing better.”

Weaver is currently ranked No. 19 on the Polo Junior Golf Rankings. The Class of 2012 graduate's main goal for tomorrow is to improve her short game.

“I want to work on making more putts tomorrow, while still placing my iron shots close to the pin,” Weaver said.

Deanna Song of Granger, Ind., is in second place with a 1-under-par 70. Rounding out the top three is Emily Joers of Waukesha, Wis., with a 1-over-par 72.

The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA provides valuable exposure for college golf scholarships, and has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 49 states and more than 40 countries. To ensure scholarship opportunities for all junior golfers who have the skill, the AJGA created the Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program to provide financial assistance to young players in need.

Titleist, the AJGA's National Sponsor, has been the catalyst and driving force behind the Association's success since 1989. Rolex, which is in its third decade of AJGA support, became the inaugural AJGA Premier Partner in 2004. In 2007, after 12 years of support, Polo Ralph Lauren became the AJGA's second Premier Partner.

AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf. Former AJGA juniors have compiled more than 500 victories on the PGA and LPGA Tours. AJGA alumni include Stewart Cink, Matt Kuchar, Hunter Mahan, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Paula Creamer, Cristie Kerr, Inbee Park and Morgan Pressel.

Second-round tee times for the McArthur Towel & Sports Future Legends will run from 7 a.m.-12:10 p.m. off the No. 1 tee at The Legend at Bristlecone. For more information about the McArthur Towel & Sports Future Legends, contact Tournament Director Courtney Jones at (678) 617-9406.
