Shaun prevails at Genesis Junior Championship Kaui leads wire-to-wire at Sycuan Resort's Willow Glen Course
EL CAJON, Calif. — Corey Shaun of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., fired a 14-under-par 202 for the win Thursday at the Genesis Junior Championship. In the Girls Division, Alexandra Kaui of Las Vegas, maintained her lead, winning with 4-under-par 212 at Sycuan Resort's Willow Glen Course.
The Genesis Junior Championship was a 54-hole stroke play event conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Sycuan Resort's Willow Glen Course in El Cajon, Calif. The tournament field featured 96 boys and 36 girls from nine states and seven countries. The Boys Division played the par-72 course at 6,657 and the Girls Division played at 6,058 yards. Following the second round, each division was cut to the top 50 percent and ties.
Shaun continued his second-round lead by keeping his mistakes to a minimum. Shaun tied the final-round low score with a 7-under-par 65 on the day. Reflecting on his successful AJGA season, Shaun said this was the best tournament he's played.
“This win is definitely one of my best accomplishments,” Shaun said. “I'm really proud I won this tournament because I really wanted to win my last AJGA tournament of the season.”
Zecheng Dou of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., the other final-round low scorer, came in second at 10-under-par 206. In third was Matthew Negri of El Cajon, Calif., at 7-under-par 209. Fourth place was shared by Peter kyo won Koo of Chandler, Ariz., Skyler Finnell of Carmel, Calif., Ryan Books of Seattle, Wash., Andrew Morgan of Long Beach, Calif., and Michael Moorhead of Newport Beach, Calif., at 6-under-par 210.
Kaui carded 2-over-par 74 on the day, battling neck and neck with the competition. Kaui didn't save her best for last, but did maintain a lead strong enough to take the win.
“I'm very glad I shot five under the first day,” Kaui said. “That gave me some leeway and let me keep ahead.”
In second place was Jenny Hahn of Henderson, Nev., at 3-under-par 213. Hee Wook Choi of San Diego, and Lilia Vu of Fountain Valley, Calif., tied for third at 2-under-par 214.
The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA provides valuable exposure for college golf scholarships, and has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 49 states and more than 40 countries. To ensure scholarship opportunities for all junior golfers who have the skill, the AJGA created the Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program to provide financial assistance to young players in need.
Titleist, the AJGA's National Sponsor, has been the catalyst and driving force behind the Association's success since 1989. Rolex, which is in its third decade of AJGA support, became the inaugural AJGA Premier Partner in 2004. In 2007, after 12 years of support, Polo Ralph Lauren became the AJGA's second Premier Partner.
AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf. Former AJGA juniors have compiled more than 500 victories on the PGA and LPGA Tours. AJGA alumni include Stewart Cink, Matt Kuchar, Hunter Mahan, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Paula Creamer, Cristie Kerr, Inbee Park and Morgan Pressel.
For more information about the Genesis Junior Championship, please contact AJGA National Headquarters at (770) 868-4200.
