Yoon's consistency captures win at Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club
Torres takes Girls Division at TaylorMade-adidas Golf Junior at Innisbrook hosted by Sean O'Hair

PALM HARBOR, Fla. — James Yoon of Bradenton, Fla., secured his first AJGA victory at the TaylorMade-adidas Golf Junior at Innisbrook hosted by Sean O'Hair with a 1-over par 214 for the tournament. Maria Torres of San Juan, Puerto Rico took the Girls Division by three strokes carding a tournament total of 2-over-par 212.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the TaylorMade-adidas Golf Junior at Innisbrook hosted by Sean O'Hair was a 54-hole stroke-play competition played at Innisbrook Resort & Golf Club. The event featured 135 boys and 72 girls, ages 12-18, from 27 states and 16 countries and Puerto Rico. The Boys Division played on the par-71 Copperhead Course at 7,325 yards while the Girls Division played on the par-70 North Course at 5,800 yards.

Yoon fired an even-par 71 during the second and final rounds of the tournament. He sunk a 10-foot putt for birdie on No. 18 to secure the title.

“I worked really hard after the first and second round and made more putts in a tournament than I have in awhile,” Yoon said. “I hit the ball really well today, and hit about 16 or 17 fairways.”

Yoon is a 2011 second-team Rolex Junior All-American and has signed a letter of intent with University of California Berkeley.

Just behind Yoon, Tae Wan Lee of Orlando, Fla., finished second with a 3-over-par 216 and Won Jun Lee took third with 4-over-par 217. Jacob Joiner of Albany, Ga., and Haoyuan Lu of Bradenton, Fla., tied for fourth with 5-over-par 218.

At the North Course, Torres also stayed consistent throughout the tournament shooting even-par 70 for both the second and final round. Torres said she was able to maintain consistency by staying levelheaded and relaxed throughout the weekend.

“I only thought about each individual shot,” Torres said, “I was relaxed and I had fun. I kept an even pace the whole weekend.”

This tournament was Torres' seventh AJGA tournament. After five top-10 finishes in 2011 she was excited to finally take home a title.

“It feels great [to win],” Torres said. “I know now that all the hard works pays off.”

Anna Newell of Tampa, Fla., and Nicole Morales of South Salem, N.Y., tied for second with a 5-over-par 215.

About the AJGA

The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA provides valuable exposure for college golf scholarships, and has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 49 states and more than 40 countries. To ensure scholarship opportunities for all junior golfers who have the skill, the AJGA created the Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program to provide financial assistance to young players in need.

Leadership Links

What is Leadership Links?

Leadership Links is a new program whereby the AJGA is able to further its mission to help develop young men and women by teaching charitable giving skills and service-oriented practices at an early age. This program gives juniors all the tools necessary to donate their time, talent and resources to local charities and the AJGA youth development programs.
