West Comes From Four Strokes Back to Win Bass Pro Shops / Payne Stewart Junior Championship
Lee tops Girls Division at Rivercut Golf Course for her second win this season
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Noah West of Belden, Miss., fired a 5-under-par 31 to come from behind and win the Bass Pro Shops / Payne Stewart Junior Championship at Rivercut Golf Course. Patricia Lee of Lone Tree, Colo., held her lead, posting a 5-over-par 41 to win the Girls Division.
The Bass Pro Shops / Payne Stewart Junior Championship was a 45-hole stroke play tournament conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at the Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield, Mo. After thunderstorms delayed the final round of the event, Thursday's round was cut to a stipulated round of nine holes, with the boys playing the front nine and the girls playing the back nine. The tournament field featured 98 boys and girls ages 12-18 from 17 states and Thailand. The Boys Division played the par-72 course at 6,930 yards while the Girls Division played at 6,010 yards.
West started the day with a birdie on his first hole, a sign of what was to come as he birdied five of the nine holes he played. West also kept his scorecard bogey-free on his way to winning his first AJGA event.
“I made some long putts,” West said after the round. “I had that feeling like when I got on the greens I could make every putt.”
Landon Lyons of Baton Rouge, La., and Joseph Winslow of Overland Park, Kan., both finished tied for second with tournament totals of 5-under-par 175. Donald Stimble of Shell Knob, Mo., and Rylee Reinertson of Gibbon, Neb., rounded out the top five with scores of 3-under-par 177.
In the Girls Division, Lee finished three strokes ahead of the field, not giving up any strokes to her fellow group members. Lee said the putting is what built the lead for her this week, and is what kept her alive during the final round.
“My putting was pretty good all week.” she said. “Today it wasn't great but it wasn't bad either.”
Sarah Schmelzel of Phoenix finished second with a three-round total of 7-over-par 187 while Summar Roachell rounded out the girls top three with a 9-over-par 189.
