Both champions conquer the competition at Plymouth Country Club
PLYMOUTH, Mass. — Nick Rodriguez of Shrewsbury, Mass., takes the Boys Division with a final-round score of 1-under-par 68 for a tournament total of 5-over-par 212. Samantha Marks of Maitland, Fla., went wire-to-wire to take the Girls Division with a final round score of 10-over-par 79, bringing her tournament total to 16-over-par 223.
The Deutsche Bank Partners for Charity Junior Shoot Out was a 54-hole stroke play event conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Plymouth Country Club in Plymouth, Mass. The tournament field consisted of 96 players from 18 states including Ontario and Mexico. The Boys Division played the par-69 course at 6,228 yards and the Girls Division played at 5,855 yards.
Rodriguez remains very pleased with his final-round performance after he carded 5 birdies and 11 pars despite the difficult course and high winds.
“It feels good,” Rodriguez said. “I've played in other AJGA events before and have seen other players win so I'm extremely happy that it was my turn.”
Samuel Kim of Irvine, Calif., and Ben Balter of Wayland, Mass., tied for second with a tournament total of 7-over-par 214. Colin McDade of Rye, N.Y., and Kee-Socrates Fryxell of Davenport, Iowa both tied for fourth, with a tournament total of 8-over-par 215.
Despite a difficult final round, Marks kept her positive attitude to the end, resulting in her first ever AJGA victory.
“I'm extremely happy that I won, but there are some things I need to work on when I get home,” Marks said. “I've been playing AJGA for almost four years now and I know I deserve this.”
Marks has committed to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and will be attending come next fall.
Alexandra Hershberger of Basking Ridge, N.J., finished second with a final-round score of 9-over-par 78 for a tournament total of 20-over-par 227. Rounding out the top three from the Girls Division was Kelly Whaley from Farmington, Conn., with a final-round score of 11-over-par 80 for a tournament total of 21-over-par 228.
