Talley keeps lead at AJGA Girls Championship
Junior hangs on to two stroke lead at The Furman Golf Club
GREENVILLE, S.C. — Emma Talley of Princeton, Ky., shot a 1-under-par 71 in the second round to hang on to the lead at the AJGA Girls Championship. The 2010 Rolex Junior All-American still has a two stroke lead with a 6-under-par 138.
The AJGA Girls Championship is a 54-hole stroke-play event conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at The Furman Golf Club in Greenville, S.C. The 78-player field features golfers from 16 states and 10 countries, who are playing the par-72 course at 1,624 yards.
Talley played consistently on the back nine despite hitting only four of seven fairways.
“It was a struggle,” Talley said. “My short game saved me on a couple holes to save par. I struggled a little bit off the tee, but hopefully tomorrow I can prepare myself to hit more fairways.”
Talley made three birdies during her second round, but she still feels she may need to prepare more for the final round.
“Even though this is an open tournament, I feel like it is more of an invitational because there are so many good players out here,” Talley said.
In a tie for second place are Annie Park of Levittown, N.Y., and Rinko Mitsunaga of Roswell, Ga., at 4-under-par 140 and Karen Chung of Livingston, N.J., is in fourth at 2-under-par 142. In a five-way tie in fifth place are Andrea Lee of Hermosa Beach, Calif., Jessica Hoang of North Augusta, S.C., Hee Wook Choi of San Diego, Calif., Shannon Aubert of Reunion, Fla., and Lauren Diaz-Yi of Thousand Oaks, Calif., who each sit at 1-over-par 145.
The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA provides valuable exposure for college golf scholarships, and has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 49 states and more than 40 countries. To ensure scholarship opportunities for all junior golfers who have the skill, the AJGA created the Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program to provide financial assistance to young players in need.
