Survey Says...

With the help of HP iPAQ Pocket PCs, the AJGA Equipment Survey makes its way into the 21st century.

By Seth Silverstein

If you’ve played in any AJGA events, then you’re a veteran of the equipment survey – and you know the drill: Walk up to the starter’s tent. Rattle off to the staff member everything you’ve lugged to the tee. Put the peg in the ground, and off you go.

But if you’re fairly new to the AJGA, then you don’t know how it used to be. In the “old” days – circa 2000 – staff members used to hand write every part of the equipment survey.

The process was slow and tedious, and the information was incomplete. Individual player usage was only tracked for balls and shoes – the rest of the survey was tracked using “tick” marks, and individual usage of key equipment such as drivers, putters and irons weren’t recorded.

The AJGA Equipment Surveys used to be done by hand. They are now computed on HP iPAQ 1910 Pocket PCs. To learn more about iPAQs, visit hp's Web site.

Then hp, one of the AJGA’s top sponsors, donated 10 HP iPAQ 1910 Pocket PCs and forever changed the way the AJGA tallies its equipment surveys.

These days, instead of pen and paper, all the AJGA’s equipment surveys are conducted on the state-of-the-art iPAQs. Using the iPAQs saves an on-site staff member two to three hours at each event, and allows that staffer to make the event better in other ways.

"hp is a proud sponsor of the AJGA and all it does in preparing young men and women for college careers and beyond – both in golf and in life," said Roger Frizzell, hp Public Relations director, Personal Systems Group. "We appreciate the opportunity to provide our technology to further increase the level of efficiency and level of satisfaction the players experience at AJGA events."

The iPAQs allow the AJGA to quickly record each participant’s personal equipment – information that’s invaluable to manufacturers that sponsor the AJGA. By providing equipment survey results, the AJGA is able to attract and retain many top manufacturers and sponsors – which ultimately result in lower membership and tournament fees.

So next time you head to the tee for the equipment survey, keep in mind that it will only take a minute – and you’ll get started on time.
