KIRK
FIRES 5-UNDER-PAR TO SECURE VICTORY THAT ELUDED HIM A YEAR
AGO
Lincicome repeats 2001 victory at Chateau Elan
A pair
of Polo Golf Junior All-Americans, Chris Kirk of Woodstock,
Ga., and Brittany Lincicome of Seminole, Fla., claimed hard-fought
titles at the AJGA TaylorMade-adidas Golf Junior at Chateau
Elan. It was the first time in three years that the tournament
was not interrupted by bad weather.
After
entering the final round with a one-stroke deficit, Kirk captured
the Boys Division by making birdie on two of his final three
holes on the par-71 Chateau Course at Chateau Elan Resort.
With rounds
of 70-67, the University of Georgia-bound Kirk fought through
a crowd of players on his way to the top. After the first
round, he was one of 30 players within three shots of the
lead. At the end of the final round, he separated himself
by two shots at 5-under-par 137.
In the
Girls Division, the 17-year-old Lincicome shot rounds of 71-73
on the Woodlands Course to win her second Girls Division title
at Chateau Elan Resort at even-par 144. Two years ago, Lincicome
won the tournament when it was played on the Chateau Course.
Lincicome
gave herself a chance for birdie on the 18th hole, where she
stuck her approach on the par-4 to eight feet. When she missed
her birdie putt, she assumed she was heading for a playoff,
not knowing that Nicole Hage had just made bogey to finish
one shot back. The victory was somewhat surprising to the
long-hitting Lincicome, but in the end, the championship was
hers.

GERLICH
CLAIMS VICTORY, HOLDS OFF LOPEZ DURING FINAL ROUND
Girls Division play cancelled due to inclement weather;
Connelly wins in sudden-death playoff
Jeff
Gerlich of Austin, Texas, fired a 4-under-par 138 total to
win the TaylorMade-adidas Golf Junior at Bentwood by one stroke
over Lance Lopez of Fresno, Texas. Stephanie Connelly of Pasadena,
Md., won a sudden-death playoff after the girls division final
round was cancelled due to inclement weather.
Gerlich's
round of 70 hinged on his putting, fueling nine birdies and,
at one point, a six-shot lead. Lopez, playing with Gerlich
in Sunday's round, fired a final-round 68 to finish 3-under-par
for the tournament. On the last four holes, Gerlich finished
5-over-par, while Lopez held steady making pars.
Lopez
finished second at 71-68-139. Colt Knost of Pilot Point, Texas,
fired Sunday's low round putting him alone in third at 74-66-140.
Bronson Burgoon of The Woodlands, Texas, finished in fourth
at 73-68-141. Michael Lester of Dallas, and Ryan Roberge of
The Woodlands, Texas, rounded out the top-five at 142.
The
girls division was set to tee off at noon, moments after the
weather horns sounded, signaling the suspension of play. With
no girls groups leaving the teeing ground and raging weather
wreaking havoc on Bentwood Country Club, the girls division
title was settled through a sudden-death playoff once the
weather passed some two hours after–a playoff Stephanie
Connelly eventually won over Kelly Louth and Mallory Code
on the third hole.
