It’s
a common scene at many of our events: A staff member out on
the golf course, with his or her golf cart tucked partially
behind a tree, trying to sneak in a few bites of a sandwich
between rulings.
Truth is, when we’re out on the road working at an AJGA
event, we usually don’t have time to kick back and enjoy
leisurely lunches at the golf course — especially if we’re
the staff member assigned to keep an eye on the group that’s
flirting with red cards at every checkpoint.
When it comes to dinner, however, we have some extra time on
our hands, and the crew is always up for trying new places and
testing out some of the local cuisine. Some places are worth
a return trip, or in some cases, several return trips.
Here are some can’t-miss restaurants you might encounter
on your next AJGA tournament road trip.
If you’re playing in this week’s Las Vegas event
and are staying at the host hotel, you don’t even need
to go outside to find a good meal. The international buffet
at the Sunset Station has something for everyone.
Sure, buffets are everywhere in Vegas, but in terms of price
and convenience, this one is tough to beat.
Just down the road from Las Vegas is the city of Las Cruces,
N.M. OK, so it’s really not that close to Vegas, but trust
me, the Mexican food at La Posta is worth the
trip. How delectable is it? Well, let’s just say it was
good enough for the AJGA staff to stop by three consecutive
nights during the Las Cruces event last year.
If you’re in the mood for a solid cheeseburger and a towering
stack of onion rings, be sure to visit Johnnie’s
Charcoal Broiler while you’re in Edmond, Okla.
They’re open for both lunch and dinner, but the style
of the restaurant — meals are cooked-to-order, but there
is no table service — lends itself more towards stopping
there for lunch.
While we’re on the topic of burgers — a subject
I know more about than perhaps I should — I can’t
help but mention IN-N-OUT Burger. If you live
in Arizona, California or Southern Nevada, you know what the
rest of the country is missing. There’s not much to choose
from on the menu — just burgers, fries, drinks and their
famous t-shirts — but as far as burger chains go, in my
mind, there’s none better.
You can also find a good burger — and much, much more
— at Hickory Park in Ames, Iowa. Everyone
can find something they like on the menu, and even though the
size of the platters will cause your jaw to drop to the table,
be sure to leave room for dessert. Their sundaes and other concoctions
are worth saving space for.
Those are just a few good places to grab a bite to eat while
you’re on the road at an AJGA event. If you’re in
one of those cities, give ‘em a shot. And don’t
be surprised if you run into our staff.
