My Scotty Cameron Moment - June 9, 2008

Each week, the AJGA honors the boy and girl junior golfers who shoot the lowest round during the final tournament round. Each of these players will be presented with one of this year's new Scotty Cameron putter covers in silver or gold. In this feature, we will hear from the players each week who take home this honor and what helped them get there.

Junior All-Star at Lake Havasu

“My best shot was probably on my last hole which was No. 9,” said Alex Rodriguez of Plano, Texas, who shot a 3-under-par 69 during the final round. “I never shot under 70 before. I hit a good drive down the fairway, hit a decent shot that went about 10 feet past the hole and then two-putted for par.”

“I was about 80 yards out on the par-5 No. 5,” said Gabriella Then of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., who shot a final-round 4-over-par 76. “I hit my sand wedge from about 80 yards out on an uphill lie against the wind. The ball landed about 3 feet from the hole.”

John Deere Classic Junior Open

“On No. 5, I had a drive down the middle with the wind dead against me,” said Jonathan Hauter of Morton, Ill., who shot a 1-under-par 71 during the final round. “I was 180 feet out and I used my 5-iron to hit a low draw and put it within 5 feet of the flagstick. That shot gave me momentum for the rest of the round.”

“On No. 11, I was able to chip out from about 15 yards away,” said Valentina Fontaine of Hilton Head Island, S.C. “The wind was against us all day, but my chipper and putter were working really well, and that helped a lot.”

Junior All-Star at Aspen

“I made a 20-foot birdie putt on No. 16, a hole I doubled both previous days,” said Christopher Ingham of Pinecrest, Fla., who’s 1-under-par 71 helped lead him to the victory.”It put me into the lead at the end.”

“On No. 16 I had a really good up and down for par,” said Michelle Butler of Dunedin, Fla., who shot an 8-over-par 80 during the final round. “I was under a tree and punched out 60 yards away. Then I made a 15-foot par putt.”

Medicus Preseason Junior at Callaway Gardens

“I was three over going into nine. I hit the bunker on No. 10 and made it within 20 feet for par,” said Dylan Shepard who shot an even-par 72 during the final round to win the tournament. “I birdied Nos. 10 and 11, which pushed me forward to pull a low score for the day.”

“I bogied No. 1 and then birdied No. 2. I did the same with holes No. 5 and 6,” said tournament champion Maria Piccio of Bradenton, Fla., who shot a final-round 3-under-par 69. “Then I birdied No. 9, which put me under for the first time. I knew I just had to play well and be patient to maintain a low score.”

"My moment was on No. 13. I was struggling and making a lot of pars,” said Taylor Szyndlar of Jupiter, Fla., who shot a 2-under-par 70 during the final round. “Then I hit one in there really close to about seven feet to make birdie and that kind of got me on a roll for the rest of the round."

"I missed a 5-footer for birdie on No. 14 and I had a longer putt for birdie on No. 15 on a much harder line,” said Amy Ruengmateekhun of Garland, Texas, who shot an even-par 72 during the final-round to win the tournament. ”After I made that, I had a lot of momentum coming into the final holes."

Ringgold Telephone Company Junior Classic

“I didn’t expect as much, I just waited for the birdies to come,” said Phillip Choi of Orlando, who fired a final-round 6-under-par 66. “They came back to back on holes 17 and 18. I was patient, I told myself it would come.”

“I didn’t feel like I was playing well, but I took it one shot at a time,” said Kristina Wong of Bradenton, Fla., who shot a 5-under-par 67 during the final round. “I made longer putts and I just tried not to think about scores.”
