My Scotty Cameron Moment - August 12, 2009

Each week, the AJGA honors the boy and girl junior golfers who shoot the lowest round during the final tournament round. Each of these players will be presented with one of this year's new Scotty Cameron putter covers. In this feature, we will hear from the players each week who take home this honor and what helped them get there.

Randy Wise Junior Open

“I hadn’t played No. 12 well all week, but today I hit my best iron shot, a 3-iron,” said Joey Garber of Petoskey, Mich., who won via a four-hole, sudden-death playoff. “It came up about three feet short, but I still made a birdie. It really got my back nine going after I missed a birdie putt on No. 11.”

“I was really trying to keep the ball in the fairway all day to help keep me out of trouble,” said Amy Meier of Rochester Hills, Mich., after shooting a final-round, 1-under-par 71. “My strategy helped me make a birdie on No.16 and that really set the table for me to shoot under par.”

AJGA Southeast Junior Open

“I played well. I wasn't striking the ball as well, but my up-and-down game was good,” said Briana Mao of Folsom, Calif., who had a final-round 70 and won the Girls Division in a sudden-death playoff. “I managed to two-putt and make some birdies.”

“I hit my irons extremely well and had three tap-in birdies,” said Daniel Stringfellow of Roselle, Ill., who finished in third place after a final-round, 5-under-par 66. “Basically, it was very solid and that’s how I scored well.”

TEE UP Junior Challenge presented by Kamen Rider Dragon Knight Cup

“I didn't have an actual defining moment, but as I stood on the first tee I knew it was going to be my day,” said Szu-Han Chen of Beaumont, Calif., who shot a 4-under-par 68 and won the Girls Division by four strokes.

Ki Taek Lee of La Quinta, Calif., also shot 4-under-par 68. “The first three holes really were the defining moment for me as I birdied all three of them. I thought about the headcover all day.”

“I hit a 390 yard drive on No. 16 which was the best shot I hit all week,” said Rak Cho of Brea, Calif., after shooting a 4-under-par 68 in the final round. “I ended up only having a gap wedge into the par-5 which helped me birdie.”

Jay Hwang of San Diego also shot a 4-under-par 68 to tie for low final-round honors with Cho.

Stars of Texas Junior presented by Party City

“I made a real good up-and-down on No. 10 and drained a 40-footer for birdie on No. 11,” said Carl Jonson of Bainbridge Island, Wash., after a final-round, 3-under-par 69. “Then, I chipped in for birdie on No. 12 and from then on, I just kind of hung in there.”

“On No. 9, I had a six-meter putt for par down a hill, and I knew I was going to make it and I did,” said Enrique Livas of Monterrey, Mexico, who also had a final-round 69. “So after that I knew I was going to play well, and I fought away bogeys the rest of the round.”

Wesley McClain of Diboll, Texas, also had a 3-under-par 69 to earn a Scotty Cameron headcover. “On No. 10, I hit 3-wood way right, and then I almost hit it in the hazard on my second shot, but I chipped in from there, which really jump started me for the rest of the round.”

“I birdied No. 8, and that was really big for me because I knew I was going to bogey No. 9 because I had all week, so I knew I could go low after that birdie,” said Rachel Mulkey of Flower Mound, Texas, after her final-round 74.

“I birdied No. 7 and that increased my confidence,” said Hannah Arnold of Lufkin, Texas, who also had a final-day 74. “Then, I got up- and-down on No. 15, which kept me going for the rest of the round.”

“I made a 20-footer on No. 2, my 11th hole of the day, that I was just trying to lag close, and I knew I was going to be able to keep it going from there,” said Stephanie Hseih of Alamo, Calif., who rounded out the low final rounds in the Girls Division.

Junior All-Star at Spring Creek

“On No. 18, I hit a good approach shot and was putting for birdie and the win,” said Meechai Padungsiriseth of Bradenton, Fla., after his final-round, 4-under-par 68 secured a victory in the Boys Division. “I was nervous because I knew what was on the line, but I made it.”

“My putting was really good today,” said Irina Paulin Gabasa of Cebu, Philippines, after her final-round, 2-under-par 70 helped her finish in second place. “On No. 16, I had about a 15-foot putt for birdie and made it so that was good.”
