Old Sandwich Golf Club to Host 2010 Canon Cup

Annual East vs. West matchup slated for July 26-29

BRASELTON, Ga. – Old Sandwich Golf Club, ranked No. 13 on Golfweek’s list of the Best Modern Courses, is set to host the 21st annual Canon Cup, the American Junior Golf Association announced Friday.

"The AJGA is pleased to bring Canon Cup to the Old Sandwich facility,” said Jason Ross, AJGA Vice President of Tournament Development. “The course will provide the teams with a memorable experience and great test of golf.”

Opened in 2004, the par-71 course tops out at over 6,900 yards and was designed by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore. Set in historic Plymouth, Mass., the club is situated along the oldest unpaved continuously operated road in the United States – Old Sandwich Road. The facility was recognized by Golfweek as the No. 1 "Best New Private Course" in America in 2004.

Each year at Canon Cup, the AJGA brings together the nation’s top 40 juniors in an East versus West team match play tournament. The top 10 boys and top 10 girls east of the Mississippi River compete against their counterparts from the west. The teams are chosen based on the Polo Golf Rankings that reward top finishes in national junior golf events.

The 20th edition of the matchup in 2009 was one of the most exciting to date. After a back-and-forth battle throughout singles matches, the West used a victory in the final boys match to secure the win, 25.5 - 24.5. The West Team leads the all-time competition with an 11-8-1 record. The East Team last secured a victory in 2004.

The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The largest Association of its kind, the AJGA has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of more than 5,000 junior golfers from 49 states and more than 30 foreign countries.

Titleist, the AJGA's National Sponsor, has been the catalyst and driving force behind the Association's success since 1989. Rolex Watch USA, which is in its third decade of AJGA support, became the inaugural AJGA Premier Partner in 2004. In 2007, after 12 years of support, Polo Ralph Lauren became the AJGA's second Premier Partner.

AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf. More than 200 former AJGA juniors currently play on the PGA and LPGA Tours and have compiled more than 350 wins. AJGA alumni include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Stewart Cink, Davis Love III, Cristie Kerr, Pat Hurst, Paula Creamer, Brittany Lincicome, Morgan Pressel and Julieta Granada.
