2012 AJGA Winter/Spring Schedule Announced

The tournament schedule for the AJGA's winter/spring season includes 25 tournaments between MLK Day and Memorial Day (with a bonus Preseason event just a few days later). Many of the same venues of 2011 return for another run in 2012, while a handful of new courses will play host to their first AJGA tournaments. Here is what is in store:

Preseason Junior Series

Ten events provide opportunities for less-experienced AJGA members looking to get their first shot at AJGA competition. The Preseason Junior Series offers a chance for AJGA members to earn Performance Stars, which can lead to additional playing opportunities. The first two events in the series take place March 30-April 1, and the final Preseason event runs June 1-3. In 2011, Sierra Brooks of Sorrento, Fla., kicked off her AJGA career as the medalist at the season's first Preseason event and concluded the season by winning the Montverde Academy Junior All-Star Championship and achieving Rolex Junior All-America honors.

Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy Junior All-Star Series

Three events are scheduled in the spring for 12- to 15-year-old AJGA members, as part of the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy Junior All-Star Series. These tournaments provide opportunities for the AJGA's younger players to tee it up against their peers as precursor to AJGA Open tournaments. Success in this Series has portended future success for many players. Jordan Spieth and Vicky Hurst gained early experience in the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy Junior All-Star Series before achieving Rolex Junior Player of the Year honors.

Open Tournaments

All nine AJGA Open spring events are returnees from 2011, beginning with the second annual Puerto Rico Junior Open, January 13-16. The bulk of the AJGA's annual schedule consists of Open tournaments, providing opportunities for all eligible boys and girls, ages 12-18, to compete. The AJGA's three Open events over Easter weekend have been staples on the schedule for over a decade. Combined with the three TaylorMade-adidas Golf Qualifiers, as well as the TaylorMade-adidas Golf Junior All-Star at Chateau Elan, more than 900 playing opportunities are available that weekend.

Invitationals

In 2012, the ANNIKA Invitational changes dates to the MLK holiday weekend, Jan. 13-16, while the HP Boys Championship at Carlton Woods still holds the Presidents' Day weekend dates, Feb. 17-20. For players who ascended the Polo Golf Rankings in 2011, this pair of Invitationals provides premier opportunities to jump-start the new year. As the AJGA transitions from spring to summer, the Thunderbird International Junior will once again be contested over Memorial Day weekend at Grayhawk Golf Club's Raptor Course.
