Media Award: Randy Wise Junior Open

A local television station interviews Tournament Director Katie Tahara during the 2012 Randy Wise Junior Open.

Local organizers of the Randy Wise Junior Open, which took place at Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club in Grand Blanc, Mich., August 6-9, 2012, have earned the Media Award from the American Junior Golf Association. The Media Award recognizes a tournament with outstanding media participation and coverage before, during and after the event across a variety of platforms.

Each year, the AJGA presents awards to the tournaments with the best individual hospitality, Junior-Am fundraising tournament, charitable giving and volunteer base. The AJGA also recognizes the year’s most outstanding golf professional, superintendent and general manager, as well as the most improved event, best new tournament, best Invitational and overall tournament of the year.

“The media coverage promotes awareness in the community and that has many benefits,” said media chairman Greg Leach of Media Resources, LLC. It generates interest for young people to get involved in golf. It helps increase participation among local businesses and community leaders in the Junior-Am and as sponsors. It also encourages spectators to come see some wonderful golf.”

The Randy Wise Junior Open welcomed media from multiple outlets, including Marc Jacobson from WJRT-TV 12 and Joe Akers from the Oakland Press. Jacobson conducted live interviews with Tournament Director Katie Tahara, tournament sponsor Randy Wise and AJGA junior Bailey Truesdell for the morning news segment, while Akers provided daily coverage and was onsite to conduct interviews and take photos.

“The tournament committee's hard work to secure Warwick Hills Country Club – with its extensive golf history – contributes to media interest,” Leach said. “The PR staff at the AJGA is instrumental in assisting to help promote our tournament. The biggest thing is to establish and maintain strong relationships with the local media and when they agree to provide coverage, try to bend over backwards to provide them everything they need to do their job.”

The event celebrates its 29th year on the AJGA schedule Aug. 19-22 at Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club.
