The American Junior Golf Association has presented the 2014 Lipari Energy Junior Championship presented by City of London with the Most Improved Tournament of the Year Award. The tournament, which surpassed its previous top-notch efforts, was honored for attaining improvements in each area of the event from its debut on the AJGA schedule in 2013.

Each year, the AJGA presents awards to the tournaments with the best individual hospitality, Junior-Am Fundraising Tournament, charitable giving and volunteer base. Awards are also given to the events with the highest media and social media participation. Finally, the AJGA recognizes the year’s most outstanding golf professional, superintendent and general manager, as well as the most improved event, best new event, best Junior All-Star tournament, best Invitational and overall tournament of the year. Tournament awards for the 2014 season will be presented on-site at the 2015 tournament.

“The London-Laurel County Tourist Commission believes in the mission of AJGA,” said Tournament Chairman Rodney Hendrickson. “As an individual, I can tell you this is one of my favorite events of the year. We are honored to receive this award along with Lipari Energy and the Crooked Creek Golf Club.”

In 2014, the event provided a college coaches hospitality room, complimentary passes to Gold’s Gym the week of the event as well as use of the club’s facilities which included a pool, tennis court and additional workout facility, and free yardage books to competitors, among other things.

With full support from the community and the London & Laurel County Tourist Commission, players, parents and coaches alike enjoyed support from hotels with discounted room rates and restaurants with promotional specials and discount coupons. Local businesses throughout the community banded together to support the Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant and the Lipari Energy Foundation with a Junior-Am Fundraising Tournament – which grew from an eight team single-day event in 2013 to a 34-team, two-day event in 2014.

“The growth of the Junior-Am Fundraising Tournament can be contributed to our sponsorship chairman Levi Alley and Corey Nolf, who represents our tournament sponsor,” Hendrickson said. “Both Corey and Levi committed to a second day of the Junior Am from the very beginning and it was a huge success.”

The event will celebrate its third year on the AJGA schedule in 2015, solidifying itself as an opportunity for local juniors to compete at a level they aspire to reach.

“The Lipari Energy Junior Championship presented by City of London has been great for junior golf in our section of Kentucky,” Hendrickson said. “We have several local junior golfers who have made playing on the AJGA tour their goal after growing up with the game and seeing this event.”

The tournament will return to the 2015 schedule as the AJGA Junior Championship presented by London & Laurel County, July 20-23.
