Hideki Matsuyama continued his scorching start to the 2016-17 season with a win at the Waste Management Phoenix Open on February 5. Matsuyama outlasted Webb Simpson in a four-hole playoff to earn the victory. His win helped Matsuyama gain the FedEx Cup lead back from Justin Thomas.

Simpson birdied three of his final four holes to finish with a final-round 64 and force a playoff. The runner-up finish was his best since finishing T2 at the 2015 Wells Fargo Championship. The 31-year-old is a four-time winner on the PGA TOUR.

Simpson competed with the AJGA from 1999-2004 and was a four-time Rolex Junior All-American before attending Wake Forest University. He won the 2001 Rolex Tournament of Champions and was a member of the Wyndham Cup East Team in 2001, 2002 and 2004.

Rickie Fowler, a spokesman for the AJGA’s Leadership Links program, finished T4 with a final-round 65. Daniel Berger, who hosted his first AJGA tournament in 2016, posted a 66-68 weekend score to finish T7.
